This is awesome! Should be worth the wait if chip supply recovers and costs come back down.

Hello,
I would like to (pre)order a HA Yellow, However I can not choose if I should pick a CM with eMMC or a Lite.
I wonder, if I buy a CM with eMMC and put an SSD in it, can i install Raspberry OS on the eMMC and HA on the SSD? Or am I forced to install HA OS on the eMMC? Even if i choose a CM with eMMC, i think its better to install HA on the SSD?
I ordered a home assistant yellow. I am planning to get the HM-MOD-RPI-PCB module (which is the Homatic CCU as a chip for Raspberry PI). I was wondering if this module will work on the J11 10-pin GPIO? Here is a link to the module https://www.amazon.de/-/en/HomeMatic-Radio-Module-Raspberry-HM-MOD-RPI-PCB/dp/B01G2FM4F0
I read that you can connect a Z-Wave module this way but I wanted to make sure before I buy it.
Thanks!
5 repliesIs this shipping?
Will we be able to get them from Europe to not pay custom fees?
Nicer looking device. Especially important if you need it somewhere visible to be central in your ZigBee/zwave network. Also it has built in ZigBee/matter.
1 replyIt appears that the KlikAanKlikUit devices uses zigbee. Yellow comes with a zigbee radio (upgradable to Matter in the future) so you should be able to connect your KlikAanKlikUit devices to yellow.
Depends on what KAKU devices we are talking about. The non premium devices are RF. For that you need additional hardware.
This box used the Silicon Labs MGM210P based on the EFR32MG21 SoC. At the moment I’am using a dongle bsed on a TI CC2652P which works very well. I wonder how the EFR32MG21 performs compared to the CC2652P
I’m trying to decide between the standard version vs the kit (minus the CM4). The only advantage I can see about getting the kit is buying a CM4 with more ram than the one that comes with the standard Yellow. What I’m not sure of, however, is whether that’s enough of a reason. I’d appreciate some thoughts/opinions on anyone who’s made a similar decision. Thanks!
1 replyThanks. I hadn’t realized how hard to find they are right now.
If you don’t mind burning some money, there are other things out there (more available than the raw board) that use a CM4, from which you can harvest the board from. I’ve been running my two HA instances on these mini-routers (https://www.seeedstudio.com/dual-gbe-carrier-board-with-4gb-ram-32gb-emmc-rpi-cm4-case-p-5029.html) for awhile. When my Yellow PoE kits arrive, I intend to pop the CM4 off the mini router and drop it into the Yellow along with an NVMe SSD and a raZberry 7 Pro.
Hi Folks… Have been reading through various posts on Home Assistant Yellow, and haven’t really arrived on an answer to which CM4 to use?
I know there are varying opinions and views, but what do people think is a good beginner CM4? I already have virtual machines running various things, so am not looking to the Home Assistant Yellow to be the HA host or anything like that.
In fact, the main driver behind purchasing a Home Assistant Yellow was to manage my ZigBee, and beyond that it will really be a voyage of discovery. Bottom line, I dont want to go overboard with the CM4, and will be looking to utilise the M.2 slot for storage.
Would be thrilled if Raspberry Pi offered a CM4 with no eMMC and loads of RAM, but alas that is not the case. So I guess I am wondering… does the CM4 for Home Assistant Yellow really need eMMC, and if not, how much RAM would be a good minimum for the Home Assistant Yellow?
Thanks in advance for input/thoughts.
3 repliesActually, RPi does offer the CM4 in a ton of configurations, for example
This is a CM4 (all have the same CPU) with WiFi/Bluetooth, 8GB of RAM, and no eMMC.
I personally have bought a CM4104032, which has WiFi/BT, 4GB RAM, and 32GB of eMMC. With such tight supply these days, I was pretty happy to find this one.
1 replyHey @ogiewon, thanks for the info. That CM4108000 looks awesome, but alas it appears to be sold out literally everywhere. Except for the people selling them for crazy amounts.
I have been able to grab CM4 units with similar specs to your CM4104032, but wasn’t sure if that was the way to go. I have a spare CM4 so will go with that for now, but will be on the hunt for a CM4108000 in the future.
EDIT: Dont suppose anyone has a good tip on where I might purchase a CM4104032 to be shipped to Australia? Some of the prices online a are nuts! And the places with reasonable pricing (Seeed, etc) have no stock.
Thanks, Mark
2 repliesGreat, except there is only one site that has any stock of anything, and that is a pi3.
Not your fault of course (unless you cornered the market). I wish I had bought 1000 Google Coral USB sticks 3 years ago.
Thanks for the update. I’ve tried https://rpilocator.com/ a few times… but whenever I click on a link the seller site states no stock? So I guess it left me wondering how does rpilocator determine if something is in stock or not?
1 replyThe issue is that these sites seem to only receive a few units at a time, and thus they sell out within minutes. If you’re a Twitter user, follow @rpilocator and enable notifications for this user’s posts. This way you’ll stand the best chance of being notified immediately when a site has inventory available. I was able to snag my CM4104032 a few weeks back using this technique.
For anyone else looking at this this is the CM4 module that’s been sold with HA Yellow:
The CM4 is a version without wireless and has 2 GB RAM and 16 GB eMMC storage
Any version with 2GB or more is going to work. You can either have eMMC or use an external SSD. But as far as I’m aware you can’t use both. Lastly you can decide whether you want WiFi or not.
Imagining a world where everything is in stock you could save money by selecting a Pi without WiFi if you don’t need it and without eMMC if your using an external SSD. But in the current climate its going to be buy what you can as long as it has 2GB memory or more
Personally I purchased a CM4 back in February with 4GB RAM, 16GB eMMC, WiFi and I’m using an external SSD. If I could have saved £5 by not having the onboard eMMC I would have.
TLDR: Any CM4 with 2GB of memory or more will work. You need eMMC or an external SSD. WiFi is optional and depends on personal preference as Yellow includes an RJ45 port.
1 replyActually, one can use the eMMC to host the HAOS, but still use the NVME drive for storage (i.e. the data that changes all of the time, and causes a typical microSD card in a PI to fail.)
Remember though, the CM4 Wireless includes WiFi and Bluetooth. So if Bluetooth is important to someone, they’ll probably want a CM4 with the wireless feature.
1 replyThanks for the advice, that’s what I really enjoy about this forum. Ended up back ordering the following…
CM4104032 RPI MODULE 4, 4GB RAM, 32GB EMMC, WIFI
CM4108000 RPI COMPUTE MODULE 4 LITE, 8GB RAM, WIFI
Hopefully they dont take too long to come in.
Element14 are saying 52 weeks from when you order a CM4, it was November.
Anyone receive their ship notification from Crowdsupply, now that we are closing in on 7/31? I’m desperately wanting to migrate my Zigbee network and rid myself of Smartthings. I’ve got 2x PoE Yellows on order and fingers-crossed the ship date on those doesn’t slip further past 8/31. Hopefully, we’ll get an update from the product team soon.
1 replyI would not expect to till after the 31st
Unfortunately I think it’s fair to say a lot of people do. For example I use Google WiFi that only has a singe ethernet port. They expect you to only need it if you know what a switch is. The default CM4 with Yellow does not have WiFi/Bluetooth which I think is a mistake. People just expect computers and IoT devices to come with WiFi. Missing Bluetooth is also a downer especially with 2020.8 having “Bluetooth as a first class citizen”.
1 replyFriends don’t let friends run home assistant on wifi.
I got mine from BerryBase. I’m in the UK but picked it up on a trip to NL.
Was excited that mine was meant to be shipping on the 12th. But it moved 7 days to the 19th. Hopefully it won’t keep moving 7 days every week. 🫣
2 repliesI ordered the POE version, so I am hoping to see it by the end of this year.
If anyone else was thinking they missed out on PoE. Something like this will offer a similar experience…
Mine shifted too. I need that Zigbee chip so I can finally rid myself of SmartThings. Fingers crossed for next weekend.
Oh no! I hope this will not happen to my order. It’s still on the 19th of Augustus for the shipping.
Just wondering how they knew it only day before the estimated shipping date that it will be delayed.
They don’t. It’s just a placeholder. As they haven’t shipped yet I expect the date will jump forward tomorrow by another week.
If you haven’t seen the update on crowdsupply. Shipping is now expected towards the last week in September. They are currently still in China shortly been loaded onto a boat to the US.
Totally disappointed by the endless delays guys… comeon can’t even deliver a project with one year delay? Unbelievable. Need to get back my money and run away…
I am disappointed not so much by the delay but by obviously factually incorrect information being given to us. The last two updated simply cannot be true at the same time.
1 replyMaybe it is easier to get new orders and money in when you show shorter delivery times on the order page even they are false. Maybe not that fair to customers
While it’s rough to deal with shipping delays, it’s the current state of the world. Working in pro audio comes with the same process of being told your equipment is coming in a month and then that being delayed to 4 months a week later. It’s not their fault that the time tables shift every day.
Anything with ICs is a headache right now. If a company does not have old inventory sitting in a warehouse, there are going to be delays. It is unfortunate. Try ordering 60 servers, and being told every 2 weeks that they will ship next week… for 6 months.
Sure, but in the July update, they told as that the initial stock had already shipped to Crowd Supply and was being processed & shipped to buyers in the next two weeks. Yesterday, Crowd Supply posted another update that said that the container ship from China would not arrive before September (the wording was vague enough that I’m not sure if it has even left yet).
So those two updates contain conflicting statements of facts that cannot easily be reconciled.
1 replyAnd they should have known more than day before that the shipment is in China and not at their warehouse being prepared to ship to customers. It is just disrespectful to the customers.
Delivery has slipped from 6/30, to 7/30, to 8/12, to 9/30. We were given apparent false info on the early July update - that the shipment had been sent to Crowd Supply to be distributed out to those of us who got onboard early. It can’t be at Crowd Supply and on a slow boat from China at the same time. C’mon, guys, do better, please!
1 replyThe July update said:
As we have finished the first production run on our side, we have shipped from our manufacturer over to Crowd Supply’s warehouse. Over the next 2 weeks, they will be processing and then shipping out your units!
That either naively assumes a transport time of zero or means that CS already has physical possession of the devices.
Keep calm, boys‘n girls!
I‘ve ordered my new car more than a year ago. The first estimate said 3 month. The second 6 month.
And then … don’t call us, we call you. This is the status for over 6 month now.
It’s the new normal. I think it’s not fair to blame Nabu Casa for the supply chain issues.
1 replyI’ve had Yamaha audio consoles change shipping date the day of delivery. In some instances going from a December 15th date to April without more than 36 hours notice. It’s really nature of the beast right now. Manufacturers can say everything is ready to go and then boom sorry nothing made it on time.
1 replyYou should try and get hold of any Google Coral devices …
Anyway, this isn’t world stopping. You can still get hold of a computer, and once you have a computer, you can run home assistant. No one needs a Yellow. People just want one.
As I wrote, it’s not about the delay, it’s about the poor communication (not even the late communication really, but we are still missing any acknowledgment by Nabu Casa that maybe the July update was a little bit premature/overenthusiastic - the August update was from Crowd Supply!).
I switched from the POE version to the non-POE because of the POE delays. I probably would not have done that if I had known that both have been delayed similarly.
1 replyI’d like to repeat an old request: will there be some european shipping available in the (near) future? Is Nabu Casa even considering?
Currently, a 135$ Yellow POE Kit will cost
'+ 20$ Shipping
'+ 30$ VAT
'+ Customs
'+ currency exchange fees
So it’s getting quite expensive to replace a Home Assistant Blue.
You need to create a support ticket referencing your order ID at Crowd Supply. The link should be somewhere in their FAQ IIRC.
1 replyThanks I’ll take a look!
unfortunately no.
Still waiting…
I believe the expected date is end of October. Nothing expected as of yet.
Would have been nice to hear something along the way aside from crickets since the last “we’re shipping…” just kidding we’re on a slow boat from China, check back in six weeks updates.
mine says
Estimated to ship:
Sep. 30, 2022
So I do not expect any tracking Id before September 30, or October 1st because of the time difference.
Maybe they sent only empty boxes from China
We are planning an update early next week. We were waiting for full test certification of PoE. The PoE-part has passed but they need to do the complete test. Once passing all, production of PoE will start soon.
The first batches of Yellow + Kit have been handed to Mouser end of July in Hong Kong. From there Mouser ships it by boat to their warehouse in Texas and then ships it directly to backers. Last update was that it was in LA. It’s unfortunately moving a lot slower than we had anticipated once we had handed it over to Mouser.
2 repliesNice to get a proper update finally
that’s good news,
but after the packages arrive in Texas, how long will it take before they arrive in Europe?
It would even be uglier if some of them need to be shipped back to china.
If my home assistant yellow kit said estimated to Ship September 30th, will we be getting tracking numbers soon? Or is there still a delay in shipments? Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Andrew
It sounds like the first batch of kits are somewhere between the port and Mousers distribution center in Texas. How long it takes them to unpack and repack is unknown. I wouldn’t expect to receive anything until at least the end of the month.
It also sounds like the PoE version has not entered production so I wouldn’t expect anything this year.
But this is all guesswork from someone who knows nothing about manufacturing.
You can cancel by opening a ticket with your order number on CrowdSupply.
My date just moved to October 7th,
For people who are impatient for there order to arrive I think it’s fair to say that this is a crowdfunding project. Some setbacks should be anticipated by both the manufacturers as by the backers.
I know the date moving up is a disappointment as backing something probably means you really want this. But on the other hand a few setbacks is not something no one couldn’t have foreseen.
I want to say thanks to all the people who helped and are still helping to make this project work.
1 replyI think it just adds 7 days everytime it passes the previous deadline.
Where is the support forum/email for home assistant yellow ?
I just got my yellow-kit and it refuses to start booting from USB if I have a NVME installed.
Nothing output to console.
I’m using a CM4-lite so no eemc to install to.
w/o NVME installed it boots and the yellow light start flashing and I get output on the console.
It looks like it is attempting to install HAOS to the non existing NVME.
I’m happy to see them arriving already. Great news.
I remember seeing some getting started guides on the home Assistant website but I’m unable to find them.
Did you buy it with a “fresh” cm4 or is it one you’ve been using previously? I know it’s possible to change the boot order on the cm4 itself.
It is a CM4-lite I used before.
With CM4 in another carrier and plain Raspbian OS I can boot off the SD card with NVME attached. I used to be able to boot off the NVME but now that seem to have broken.
I can see the Rasbian OS detecting Nvme and loading config.txt and command.txt and and then stall when trying to boot Nvme.
I also used to be able at one point to boot HAOS 32-but, but that stopped working around 8.0.
With yellow I’m not able to get any console message indicating booting is starting from usb with Nvme attached.
Just dead
I’ve ordered a different Nvme to see if that will make a difference.
1 replyIt looks like I will be receiving my Yellow soon. Just a question, where the heck can I get a CM4 node. I thought that by the time I would finally get my Yellow, they would be in good supply again. But no such luck.
Any suggestions are welcome.
2 repliesWhilst there is a support link there, it doesn’t link to any forum, mailing list or other support channel. I guess this forum or discord is it.
I was wondering if the Home Assistant Yellow will be purchasable from different places in the future? The only way to order right now from Crowd Supply is using a CC, which I don’t own currently.
If you don’t mind spending a bit of a premium, you can harvest a 4/32/Wireless CM4 out of this see studio mini router, also available on Amazon.
1 replyNot to cause alarm. But the latest update says:
The units have started shipping as of today, and the remaining orders from this batch will ship through the rest of this week!
How would we know if we are in this batch? My shipping date is today so I would assume I’m in this/the first batch. But is there anyway to be sure?
1 replyI have the same question. For me is the shipment day also today.
The only information provided: " The units have started shipping as of today, and the remaining orders from this batch will ship through the rest of this week! You’ll receive a shipping confirmation email once your order ships."
same question here,
but with the 9 hour time difference between my house and Portland, it think if anything will be shipped it will be late today or tonight.
And if the order is not in the first batch I’ll find out in a few days anyway
Damn. My order just got kicked to Estimated to ship: Oct. 14, 2022. Not happy. Hopefully this doesn’t mean I missed the boat on the first batch.
My shipment date is today.
I contacted support and they say:
Thanks for reaching out! Your order has not shipped yet, orders placed during the crowdfunding campaign are shipping first, and pre-orders will be shipped afterwards.
Once your order ships, you will receive a shipping confirmation email that will include your tracking number.
That’s too bad. Shipping date has been moved to October 14.
When will I finally receive my Yellow?
I don’t believe there’s any accurate shipping date. crowdsupply just adds 7 days everytime the shipping date lapses.
Would be nice to know which batch we’re part of and have a proper estimate.
2 repliesThis. At this point I don’t think a “we are shipping orders XXX through YYY this week, and orders up to ZZZZ are a part of the first batch” is too much to ask.
Man, I got pushed back to October 14th as well.
