2024.11.0 and above - Update keeps rolling back

Hi everyone,

I’ve already posted here Failing to update beyond 2024.10.1 -> Rollback · Issue #140387 · home-assistant/core · GitHub

I’ve been trying for a few days to troubleshoot why I cannot update. I was originally on 2024.3.X I think, and noticed that no many how many times I tried to update the version number never changed and the update was always available.

I’ve since started trying to update via console (raspberry PI 4, home assistant OS), and successfully updated to 2024.10.4, but can’t go to 2024.11.0.
I cannot go to the latest either.

I’ve looked at my supervisor log, which simply states that it crashed and rolled back.

I’ve looked at the rollback (and log.1, they’re the same) logs, and although the latest (2025.3.3) complains of a few errors of particular integrations I knew would break (cannot update until on 2025.1.1 or later); attempting to update to 2024.11.1 does not have any errors yet still crashes.

I’ve tried starting in safe mode and updating, but the update reboots back into normal mode and still fails. I can’t work out how to update and reboot into safe mode.
I’ve just tried disabling most of my integrations including HACS, and it still does the same. I’m starting to forget what ones I wanted disabled and what ones I’ve disabled for this exercise. I’ve been at this for weeks.
I’d be willing to hop into a screenshare with someone if easier that way.

I’ve run out of things to try, if anyone has any suggestions please send help!

You could make sure you have a solid backup and do a fresh install of the latest HA and then restore your backup.

I have a few backups, with my latest being multiple full backups - as I was worried something might break through the upgrade process.

Is there anything I should be cautious of when doing this?
What if it can’t boot after restoring the backup?
And is there a good way of ensuring my backup works before wiping and putting on the new one?

I haven’t had to do anything with backup restoring or manual installs since initially putting the first version on the SD card, I imagine I just remove the SD card and put the latest on there, let it boot and install, and then restore?

I think I’ll back up everything that’s on the SD card onto an external SSD or something first too, to be extra safe.
