2026.2: Home, sweet overview

Does it revert back to the new “overview” after next updates? after purging a cache? after re-login?
Asking because in my unicorn universe settings like “sidebar, default dashboard” should be a part of user (or device) settings; i.e. after new major update when a new “Overview” is proposed, it MIGHT be set as “default” to show users “here I am”, but then never pops up if a user hid it.

Why are all areas now cards instead of tabs? How to return UI to tabs?

No to both of those at least when I tried it in my test setup.

no idea.

Does anyone know what the theme variable is for the header color for the developers page?

Changing the variable as above for the header works for everything except the developers page.

Then what to worry about? ) Change once & forget. At least till the next major upgrade)))

The “–app-header-background-color” is used for header for dashboards, and - surprise! - “–sidebar-background-color” for system pages. Means - you cannot customize by a theme only a header in system pages. To achieve that, you need to either use card-mod theme or an extrenal js.

Hmm, so the navigation bar is stuffed with things I hardly ever need but the developer tools are moved? And why did the header lose its blue color, what is it making better? I miss it.

Same here. Didn’t notice anything about the new dashboards. And I don’t use yaml mode.

Maybe that I didn’t use the old Overview dashboard, but instead a Home dashboard I had made? (Just trying to understand the fuzz about the new dashboards.)

Regarding the developer tools and other behind the scenes stuff. I sort of miss an admin interface, more separated from the frontend for normal users. With admin rights, I could log in to both, but users could only access the frontend. The admin interface would me more backend-ish, for setting things up and customizing.

At least devtools was only visible for admins in sidebar (before 2026.2)

I think it is hard coded, probably no way to change it. I read somewhere, in the release notes I think it was, the change to the new header color was to bring all the dashboards inline with the developers page.

Answered a few posts above.

In fact, dashboards & system pages are not inline since are controlled by different CSS vars in a different way.

What I find really irritating is that there is zero feedback from “we” regarding the issues brought up here.

Yes, there are some emotional posts, and maybe regarding those it’s best not to add fuel to the fire - I guess not everyone will ever be happy. And no, loud and offensive posts should be ignored.

But there are some substantial criticisms, both regarding changes in this version, and on a general level.
One of them is that “they” do whatever “they” want and don’t listen to the community.
If there is no feedback or explanation as to why some decisions have been made, it makes that criticism seem more valid.

I just don’t understand why there is a big post about new versions, but silence regarding content feedback.

It worked in versions before this.

here is my existing theme with 2026.1:

I don’t use card-mod or any such thing.

:man_shrugging:
Perhaps you could use that “–app-header-background-color” variable for devtools earlier because this page was not a part of “settings”. The thing is that “settings” pages (placed under “ha-panel-config”) use a hard-coded “–app-header-background-color: var(–sidebar-background-color)” for a long time.

Well, if you Restored/Rolled-back for because of this “Change” You Don’t really understand what the Backup-Restore feature is mend for, And neither the specific Change
Basically You follow the Guide-lines ElseWhere as Pedro asked you for ( I.E How to Create Custom Theme), Or wait for Your Custom Themes Repos Owner to follow-up unpon the Changes.
That is if it’s The “header-color/active-color” You mean.

If You mean Your Tabs are gone, You just might find, That You are not in Your “Old” View
Then you should Follow The Repair Direction , to get Your “old” Dashboard as Your OverView Dashboard

How do you think ?, They Are Auto-Created AND Auto-Populated With every D… Entities, EVEN Such Which are not Intended / Or You Don’t Want to Show up In ANY User Available Dashboards
As Admin, You have The Devices/“Services” Section, where You can “Deal With” These “Entities, Beside Admins have lots of other options for this Purppose
The New OverView Dashboard is “Lame” And build for, SEE Everything your as User are NOT Suppose to see, and NOT Suppose to tamper With,” but Feel Free to try "

If You have a Property, Own House with i.e Power-Supply / HVAC And Security system, ETC. You will properly have a lot of such Entities, You “Deal With” either through automations etc. etc., NOONE But YOU (As Admin) is never mend to have access to these.

No The are not They Are “PeachFully” Populated to the Front-Menu, Thou Hidden(Until now) EVERY User can just clickt&hold in the top-menu And Unhide Them

BTW you all mention click&hold method.
Isn’t menu edit available in user settings, thus even more accessible?

was this the place where several posts where silently taken out?
I seem to miss quite a few, and tbh, I dont like that happening without any further notification by a mod in my DM about that.
Ive not flagged any post in this thread as was hinted at. No reason to censor.
Especially not when calling out on breach of the code of conduct.

 , Most people here “arguing” Don’t even Have a Regular User in his/her Install, Are apparently have No Ways to even imagine how Many Homeassistant Installs are used, They are “running” a 1 man/woman show, with “toys” which can not cause a catastrophe if “someone” “accidental” OR on purpose i.e “try to see” what happens if … , and/or Not even have a clue. i.e " They see “something is on” they may think, naaa this should be OFF in My Phone App
There is Absolutely no “Consequence” Thinking in the New Populated Dashboards

ok yes, if by that you mean that instead of/next to the not show option we now have you actually mean to be able to delete them from the overview at /config/lovelace/dashboards ?

Tbh, I wouldnt know what that would help other than make that overview a bit smaller. I mean, they are already under a fold.

yep that would be functional (imho, and not taking away anything of anyone else’s preferences)

Hey I see a lot of concerns about enforced Overview, let me clarify:

  • if you have ANY CONFIG CHANGES AT ALL in old overview you SHOULD NOT get the new experience as a default - it will leave hidden in your dashboards in settings in case you ever want to test it. But you can ignore it, and absolutely nothing will change.

  • If you kept old overview (=the full list of devices in one page with no filter in an endless scroll) and didn´t change anything (as in, nothing was reflected in the config file), we make the switch and show you a button to let you know you can go back - just creating a new dashboard with “overview” template.

  • If you are completely new and have no previous experience with any Overview, you get the new Overview. Its not forcing, you never had any previous experience.

ANYTHING ELSE is a bug, please report or follow troubleshooting - its not the intended behaviour that anyone that has made any prior choice will get overrriden by a new default dashboard.

So please, there is no enforcement conspiranoia, trust me. If we thought like that, we would have rolled out the dashbpard for everyone and not allowed you to have any other default experience. I really don’t believe in that.

If you have tried it, you know that its possible to just leave it in the background:

  • if you are worried about exposing troublesome entities, you can hide them in the entity settings (there is a toggle for “hide visibility in default panels”).
  • If you are worried someone will accidenttaly click on this panel, set a default dashboard, its system level. Then you can set an admin panel to yourself in the admin settings.
  • If you don’t feel this is useful for you, don’t use it. Its not meant to be the perfect dashboard for everyone, just a smart default for when you have no context or you feel you might use it. We have an incredibly powerful dashboard creation engine, we really want you to use it, there is no secret plan to replace custom with defaults - we just want to offer more options.

There are some things that make sense re:feedback in this channel and I’ve made a note of them, because they are constructive improvements or things we might miss. And I appreciate you all for this. You can also open feature requests or PRs in GH if the change is small, we go trough them as fast as we can.

Last remark: please be respectful. Its not nice to read some of these comments when you are trying your best. I promise you feedback is welcome. But I’m also a human being.
