5-Day Electricity Price Forecast for Germany (API for Automation)

Hi everyone,

I’m Thomas, and I’ve been experimenting with using AI to forecast electricity prices in Germany. Most people don’t realize that the share of renewable energy in the grid varies a lot depending on the weather, time of day, and overall demand.

Currently, many services only provide forecasts for the next 24 hours. I’ve developed a prototype algorithm that combines German Weather Service (DWD) data with EPEX Spot market prices to predict hourly electricity prices up to 5 days in advance. This gives a much better view of when renewable energy is abundant in the grid.

The forecast data is already publicly available as a JSON file, which could easily be used in automation systems or apps:

[
  { "timestamp": "2025-10-19-00", "strompreis_cent": 8.44 },
  { "timestamp": "2025-10-19-01", "strompreis_cent": 8.28 },
  { "timestamp": "2025-10-19-02", "strompreis_cent": 8.28 }
]

Each entry contains the hourly timestamp and the predicted electricity price in Euro cents per kWh. Lower or negative prices indicate periods when renewable energy is dominating the supply.

Would anyone else find a Germany-wide, 5-day electricity price forecast API useful for their home automation setups?
If so, please vote for this feature so we can see it happen!

Thanks,
Thomas

I find it quite interesting but i am wondering whether this is easily transferable to your neighbors (the dutch).

Do you know Electricity Maps? The electricity prices for the two countries seem almost identical. When the wind blows in Germany, it’s probably blowing in the Netherlands too :slight_smile: So I guess you can already use the values for Germany quite well for the Netherlands as well. If you want to adapt the system specifically for the Netherlands, you’d need to train it with Dutch weather data and also get weather forecasts for the Netherlands from somewhere. But in principle, it’s definitely doable.

Hi Thomas, sounds interesting! Where can I find the publicly available JSON File with the price data?

Hello Thomas,
here’s the link to the file: https://www.minicamperumbau.de/stromprognose/strompreis.json
However, I’d like to ask you not to use the information productively just yet. At the moment, the whole thing is more of a feasibility study or prototype. It’s quite likely that the interface will change — or that I might even discontinue the project altogether.
What do you intend to use the data for?
