Adding custom repositories to HA

Hi,

I’m trying to add some custom repositories to our HA dashboard.

Already referred this one Adding Custom Card to HA
but it doesn’t help in my case. I guess I need more of an idiots guide.

HA runs on raspberry pi.
HACS is in place.

Example custom repository - GitHub - nilstgmd/hvv-card: Custom Home Assistant card showing HVV departures 🚝

In this case I already have the departure sensor.

In HACS, I click on “custom repositories”, add the name , type (as dashboard) and click on add. Nothing happens after that. No error, no screen change. Just stays there. Also I don’t see any option called “front end” anywhere.

Is this because of using Raspberry Pi.
Should I be doing anything differently.
I’m just couple of weeks old in this world.

Could you please guide me ?

Thanks,
Vivek.

After adding via ‘custom’ you still need to download it, try to find it/them in the list

Hi, but the problem is in adding it. I’m unable to add it. When I click on “add” the screen freezes. I’ve tried with all types , also restarted HA. Still can’t add the custom repository.

I am not sure what you mean with freeze or if it is the same as I see…when clicking ‘add’ not much happens indeed, i.e. I have a list of custom reps visible and adding the https://github.com/nilstgmd/hvv-card as dashboard does not visually seem to change things. I then exit that screen and then see the card in the list, there I can select ‘download’ and after that I then use it as a card in the dashboard.

EDIT: it seems to only allow a manual card setup, i.e. yaml only. Works with me albeit that I donot have the underlying sensors to show any data.

Hi, ok. I’ll share screenshots once I’m back home. But in this case the pop up screen on which I click on “add” just stays open. I have to manually cancel that screen to exit because nothing happens. And I see nothing to download.

For the manual option though, how should I proceed ? Should I take out the memory card from the raspberry pi and put it in computer and add the .js file in some folder ?

Exactly… that is the behavior, not nice but it is as it is…cancel and then from the list find the hvv card and download it.

Hi,

Here are the screenshots.

It seems the add button is not doing anything. and the card cannot be found as well.

Is this some kind of general bug, or something specific to my set-up, or just me doing ‘junior artist’ things… me wondering…

thanks,
Vivek

You are not using the full https link in the repository field … look at my example above on what to use

EDIT:
the ‘custom’ add means that you will add an external repository to the list of HACS repositories, hence it needs the full url

aah… wow. how simple it was , how silly i was. smiling and cursing at once. thanks a lot for that. now i see how hacs reacts once we add the right thing… thanks again.

Just to share the final feedback : this is now working. Manual card setup was needed to make it work. ChatGPT helped me with an idiots guide to get through this. Thank you.

chatgpt/ai may indeed be of help, if the documentation is correct and/or other cases exist. For quite a few case it is known to ‘suck’ …as long as you know that it can fail…no problem
