I have just decided to set this up. I have a proxmox server that I was going to put HA onto a vm. Then I have either an old laptop, surface pro or android tablet that I would like to use as the interface in the lounge. I would love to use AI and voice to control it when I walk into the room without having to touch the screen at all and hear the response through my echo dot. Is that possible and any hints or tips would be great.
Hi, welcome to the forum!
Yes, all of this is possible with HA.
For your echo dot, I think you need: Amazon Alexa - Home Assistant

Hi and welcome
Everything you ask for is possible, but not necceserily the optimal solution.
I am abosolutely no expert… My hints:
- A tablet in the lounge as a remote control is “fancy” but not necceserily optimal.
others solutions are way simpler : automations, voice control or just using you phone to do the same. - Voice: i would use an homassistant voice preview edition. likely faster , and even more importent , local solution.
- AI: 2 scenarios . 1. ( cloud based) 6-8 sec of latency will not make it an very elegant solution…
- Scenario Local AI: expensive hardware and a lot of tinkering is needed.
Said is other words. its too early for prime time yet.

Unless you already have the gear. Mainstream no. I’d say good beta quality.
Op. Local voice takes good gear. (think a good gaming rig kind of gear.). I’d also waive you off wanting to use old echos as voice endpoints that’s advanced stuff. The rest - it’s absolutely doable. Just… Don’t try to boil the ocean and do it all at once. Good luck.
