Aeotec Gen5 Z-wave stick won't include/exclude

Hi all,

HA newbie here just starting my journey to see if this is something for me. My goal is to automate the lights in my house by including built-in smart switches so that I can continue to use the existing light switches as well. Since this is just a tryout, I purchased a second-hand Aeotec Nano Switch and a Aeotec Gen5 Z-wave stick as a controller.

I have HA running on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, and have installed the nano switch as per instructions. The light responds to the existing light switch as normal. I have installed the Z-wave JS plugin which detects the Z-wave stick. It did load the Z-wave devices from the previous owner at first, but I have just removed them.

I’m having trouble including my nano switch. When plugged into the Raspberry Pi, the Gen5 stick flashes blue, red and yellow. However, when I take it out, it seems to be dead. No inclusion mode, exclusion mode, just no light at all. I tried holding down reset button with a pin, but doesn’t give me the red flashes either. Nothing happens when unplugged.

When I manually trigger device inclusion from HA, the nano switch doesn’t get detected either.

Any pointers here?

Thanks for reading.

Factory reset nano switch and try inclusion again

You may need to factory reset that gen5 stick since it’s used.
