After upgrading to 2026.1.0 my voice assistant responds "Error talking to OpenAI"

My voice assistant is configured to use OpenAI. I restarted HA again and cycled power to the voice assistant to no avail. It was working just prior to upgrading to HA 2026.1.0. Now it just responds “Error talking to OpenAI”. I guess wait for the next update?

-Thanks

Look in the core log. It will list an error code.

Probably error 400 something… What is it?

Does it look like the one here?

Yes, similar message. I just generated this error when I said “Hey Jarvis” what time is it?

Yes it’s the same error. Can you open a bug on it for core? Post that log entry in the bug and what you were doing. I’ll add mine to it.

I’ve never opened an HA bug, how do you go about that?

-Thanks

For this. Go here:

Look for new issue and fill in the blanks. You’ll need your current version numbers. And copies of that log

Done. You can see my bug report here:

I piggybacked on your message in the bug report. I suspect this is the same issue presented when moving for 3.5 Turbo to 4o-mini. It may be that we need to upgrade our gpt instance to gpt-5.2 since that functionality was added in the upgrade

No it’s an error with an intent. They made some changes to how time was handled last version and they were they were optimizing it further and I suspect something got busted.

The error points at which intent has the issue

Messaged you about 5.1 mini

Is that related to the JSON serialization error?

Rolled back successfully to 12.5 and also needed to roll back to 4o-mini. Everything else wanted verification and ChatGPT said that, yes reasoning improves in 5 mini, but at a cost. It’s slower because it’s heavier plus you need to verify. Headed to bed. Hopefully we can all get this sorted soon. Nathan, I sent you some more messages.

Json… Possibly. Yes.

5 is heavier and yes it will be worth it… When you get streaming TTS. The reasoning let’s things happen that a one shot can never do. You’ll want reasoning on at its light setting

Update. Bernie’s bug will require a patch. They’re already on it.

The good stuff!!!

That’s great news! I recently setup a second AI voice assistant for my 16 year old son who told me he misses it!

If by “not working” you are referring to the “Error talking to OpenAI” issue, I’ve updated to 2026.1.1 and it is working for me. Maybe restart HA?

If you updated to 2026.1.1 and you still have have an issue it’s no longer this issue… you should open a separate bug.

‘error talking to openai’ is the generic error you need to find the related error on your log for the exact presentation.
