Am I missing the concept? ; iPad and guided access - very basic setup

The issue I’m facing is different from most posts concerning guided access so I am hoping to find some pointers.

Wall mounted iPad (iOS18.4) all removable apps uninstalled so pretty much a plain vanilla iPad with only companion app installed, in settings , screen time out set to 15 mins. all notifications allowed in settings.

Guided access enabled and in Node Red a flow active that sends a notification to the iPad, scheduled every 9 mins.

When the iPad screen is off, the notification wakes the iPad and shows my dashboard.
When no notification is received (if everyone is away from home or between 11pm and 7am, part of the Node Red flow) the screen turns off after time out elapses.

So far so good and all seems to be working.
The issue is; after the first notification , guided access is not resetting the 15-min idle timer and still goes to sleep despite the fact a notification was sent within that 15-min period.
Am I missing the concept of guided access ? Is a second notification not resetting the 15 min timer in iOS.?

In guided access there is also a screen off timer but that is set to ‘system’ so should follow the screen setting in ‘settings’
I’ve also tried sending critical notifications , no change
Anyone have this working at home .?
