Amazon fire HD 8 - flash with kiosk

hello,
does anyone successfully flashed these devices with HA kiosk?

is there some opensource free kiosk app that acts as HA client?

Thanks

Hi, can’t you just install the HA companion app for Android?

@Nick4 hello
already installed but tables comes with ADs, and also i am not able to have on it complete control like remotely off /
or control its camera.

thanks

What is ADs? Do you mean advertisements?

yup,

but still i wanted to be ideally power off ; or at least control its camera? not sure if something like that is possible with kiosk,

the ability to control camera is linked with that thread Remotely controlled camera cover for wall-mounted Amazon Fire HD tablet - #6 by Nick4

the thing is that i have app that is using camera, and if there is a movement it wakes tablet, but in the evening when i watch tv/ projector i dont want anything to wake tablet… so the best way to be somehow control camera remotely or make it sleep while watching TV/projector.

thanks

I had nothing but problems with Fire tablets. I use Fully Kiosk and it’d work for a week max before issues started. I switched to some basic android tablet and haven’t had issues since. I know the Fire tablets are cheaper but thats because they have all their junk on it like ads. There might be a way to completely remove the OS of the fire tablet and put what you want on it but it wasn’t worth it for me. Switching was easier.

@justthatjoeguy hello thanks,
yeah precisely, but how to replace/remove the OS?

Also, can you somehow control camera / power off table remote? or at least can you remotely suspend/wake up tablet?

Thanks

There might be instructions online somewhere on how to do replace/remove the OS, but its far beyond me. I use Fully Kiosk Browser for my kiosk needs. It allows for camera controls and restarting tablet, you basically get full access to it. There is a one time fee tho of like $10(?) per tablet or you can do a unlimited one but I only have a couple tablets and didn’t need that. You can move the license to a different tablet if it needs to be replaced. Even Fully Kiosk Browser doesn’t work well on Fire Tablets tho. You can try it out for free also, worth looking into.

You cant remove the OS. You can remove a lot of the amazon junk but you will still have some OS issues.

I have used one as a dashboard for years and the only program that had any success on it was Wallpanel, but this is very out of date now.

I have just given up with the dashboard this weekend and moved to an old samsung tab a which is working OK.

so can you send signal for example to turn off camera, and later on turn on?

thx

what do you mean by doesnt work well? with fireos or with tablet OS-reflashed?

You can enable and disable access to the tablet’s cameras. I think there might be away to do that via an automation I haven’t played around with that tho. I’ll look into that though and get back with you. I think Fully Kiosk Brower uses the tablets camera for motion detection, so the screen will turn on when there is motion, and even has the option to turn on when it sees a face. I meant FireOS, and wanted to mention it because I don’t want you to think that getting FKB would fix the issue your having with the Fire Tablet. I believe FKB’s mentions it’ll try its best to work with FireOS but FireOS is difficult, very restricking. If it’s in your budget I would say get any old android tablet and replace the Fire Tablets. They have to many problems. Its possible to make them work but you will have issues with them. Honestly I’ve removed all of my Amazon products because I have lost trust with the company.

but if u cant completely get rid of the FireOS, still there are issue with bare android os?

@justthatjoeguy currently i am using app Yakk from android store, which basically monitors movement via camera and turn on/.off screen, it works flawlessly but the issue is with my use case - ie when i power on my home theatre screen, camera reacts on in… and is randomly turning on/off based on the light in the room/on the screen, hence i need somehow send signal remotely to the tablet to pause camera/ or deep sleep.

Not sure if thats what kiosk can handle?

thanks!

No, once I no longer had FireOS my issues stopped. FKB works great with a normal non-FireOS tablet. Oh I see what your asking about with the cameras, you mean cameras other than the tablets cameras? Like you have motion somewhere on your property and the camera is displayed on your tablet?

If that’s the case there are many ways you can do this. Personally I’d used FKB, and setup a dashboard in Home Assistant that had a different card for each camera I wanted. I’d have the visibility setting for that card to show when motion was detected in a given area. Then setup an automation for when motion was detected it would turn off the screensaver for that tablet using FKB. You mentioned you had an issue with it turning on when you power on your home theater. You can have conditions and other settings to help prevent this. With FKB you can completely disable the tablets turning on or off the screensaver (black screen) and make it so Home Assistant manages it.

what exactly are you referencing by FKB?

no i mean i need to control camera inside the tablet which is responsible for detection of the movement and wake screen.

thanks

FKB is Fully Kiosk Brower.

https://www.fully-kiosk.com/ that one? assuming there are no free versions/open source …

also still not sure if u can power on off internal tablet camera…remotely.
