Android companion app won't start

I have run the Android ha app for over a year - no problem. Now it acts strangely:

  1. click on the icon and I don’t even get the splash screen - just the rotating arrow. I’ve waited over an hour with no success
  2. do a forced stop of the app and then restart it and it will start within 30 seconds
  3. if I have a persistent notification, then I can click on that notification and the app will start.
  4. open a browser on the device and run ha - no problem
  5. widgets on the device work
  6. I’ve tested on other Android devices and get the same behavior.

The last thing I remember changing before this started (about a month ago), was setting up some persistent notifications and adding alert2 (hacs). Not sure if that was related, but at least they let me get into the app (I open a door, get a notification, use that notification to open the app )

Seconding this. I find that it frequently fixes random app issues I encounter.

what version of the app are you on? 2025.8.7 has slow laod time issues the beta 2025.9.2 on the play store and github have fixed that issue. It has not rolled out to users yet because the app is currently stuck in review.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did try clearing the cache (this happens on every Android device - but I tried it on each one anyway). I haven’t tried it on an apple devices as I don’t have Apple users.

I will look for the “dont keep activities” setting - I’m not familiar with that setting. Do you recommend a setting?

Update: I found the setting - just for others on this thread - it is an"Android" developer setting - not an HA developer setting.

I’m my case it was turned off and I believe that is the recommended state.

Thanks for the suggestion - I’m on 2025.8.7 - but I don’t think even slow load times would account for several hours wait (after which I gave up - it never did load). Plus this started over a month ago so I was likely on a different version when it started.

Came here to second this.

I have the same problems, since a couple days.
Removed the whole app, still remains.

Did you do anything with persistent notifications or alert2 prior to this behaviour starting? Any other changes you recall making?

no, all my notifications are going through telegram.

one more thing to point out is, that the companion settings screen is like locked up/frozen, doesnt accept any inputs or changes.

dont know if other people also have this?

Same here. I can log on using user/pass and MFA and then pick a name for the watch, but then nothing. Also uninstalled the app on the watch and reinstalled, no difference.
