Android IP webcam connection

Hi, I have been using the android IP webcam component since its release with a old Samsung Galaxy S4 mini I had lying around at that time.
While it works properly usually, it keeps loosing connection every 12 or 24h. To make it reconnect, I simply have to unlock the phone and voilà, connection is back and it continues to work properly. As you may understand, it is quite annoying to me as I would like to be able to rely on the camera when I am far from home for a couple of days.

Has anyone else expreienced the same issue and knows how to solve it ?

I have two devices setup at the moment: a Galaxy S3 which is working fine for several weeks now without any interruption. The 2nd device (Asus Transformet TF700 tablet) looses connection once every 2 weeks or so. After a restart it’s working fine. Did not find the time yet to dive into this.

did you do something special on the phone side (like disabeling the wi-fi economy measures that some phones have implemented) ? Are you using some special ROMs ?

Similar to @Bob_NL I have 2 devices with android IP Webcam. The nexus 5 has been working uninterrupted for about 6 weeks. The Sony Xperia loses connection once ever week or two and I have to restart. When the connection issue happens I also can’t access it via the android app (tinyCam) so for me it doesn’t have anything to do with Home Assistant.

I do not think it is from HASS side either, but I wonder if there is somthing I missed in IP webcam config…

running a s3 with IP Webcam. Been pretty stable for couple months now. Went with a custom rom, but stock would work. Factory reset and only installed play store to get IP Webcam and tasker.

The trick is to use Tasker to reboot the phone every 24hr( or sooner) It seems either the application or android os cannot keep an app running with issues. Sometimes it was a week, then just a weekend and most annoying crashed each day.

Remove or disable any apps that aren’t needed. Notifications, updates, all require running services.

@Bob_NL , @twmatrim and @HickHackerz did you check the box to keep your screen always on during the streaming ?

Nope, because I want the screen to be off at all times.

Can you do this and also turn off your screen?

Shallow Sleep is enabled. The rest is not checked or selected. The screen does not stay on. It is not seen at night other than the charging LED status on the S3 which can be turned off.

Tasker will work regardless of the screen state. Think of it like Windows Task Scheduler or cron. You create a task to reboot every 24 hrs (23:59) and it will issue a OS level reboot. Here is a guide on setting up Tasker profile as its not the easiest app to configure.

I know how Tasker works, using it since 5 years or so lol. What I mean is; when you trigger a reboot through a profile, the screens stays on untill you manualy switch it off. Perhaps this can be done by a Tasker task as well, haven’t tried it yet.

Tasker basically calls a force reboot on Android OS. It almost the same as holding the power button and selecting reboot, other than tasks are not gracefully exited.

If the phone really reboots, it should go inactive and turn off the display. Unless you have IP Webcam set to boot with keep screen on, then I could that causing the screen to be black pixels but drawing power.

I think this did the trick. It has been 36+ hours now and still no disconnection… I might finally use this Webcam as I intended ! Thank you
