Been searching hard for something that would meet these requirements… maybe someone has some recommendations?
I know about Hue, but they are prohibitively expensive.
IKEA TRÅDFRI maybe?
I have a bit of Tradfri kit but no globes - but the stuff I do have was good value.

I’m fairly fluent with my english speaking capabilities, but what is a “globe”? I know what globe normally means, but here? Are you talking about a specific form of a bulb?
Regardless of the terminology, I could bring “LEDVANCE” to the table. I use Tradfris and Ledvance in my setup, they both work fairly good. The Ledvance get’s a hickup once every few months, where the bulb is changing from on to off and vice versa, but normally that get’s resolved by its own after a few days, or I just pair them again. Happens I’d say once every six months or so. 
But, I have to say, it’s not my cup of tea. I’m fading these kind of bulbs out, as I want to control the outlet itself, rather than only the bulb. Turns out, people do use the wall switch, and with bulb only, I have a new problem. So not for me anymore, if I can, I do use a Sonoff (or whatever brand) smart outlet or an R2 for most of the things now. Print a nice 3D cover and off it goes under the couch and does it’s job.
“light globe” is a fairly common term here in Australia and I suspect in the UK…
