Basically the title. Have Nest Protects that a) have now been discontinued / EOSL’d by Google and b) want to replace. I know that Google has moved the Smoke Detectors over to First Alert but those are only available through Google Home and don’t have Matter support etc.
Therefore what are people using/choosing/had good experience with in this category ?
I’m in the same position - or will be soon. I was thinking of getting standard dumb smoke detectors, then an acoustic alarm detector to handle automations etc. They don’t seem to be quite mainstream yet, but I’m sure they’re on their way.
The problem with smart smoke alarms is they may not comply with regulations - even Nest don’t in some places.
Thanks, that is the one I was looking at as only real option but wasn’t sure how well it worked. I would need to plug the Zoos dongle into a NAS as I am running HA in a container so hopefully could passthrough the USB device without issue.
If not then as @jackjourneyman said, maybe it’s just time to go back to the dumb units like the Kidde and use something like a HomePod (which listens for smoke alarms) alert when remote etc.
I have multiple First-Alert z-wave units, but find them to be highly unreliable. Many are dropping out of the network and need to be re-interviewed, most unsuccessfully. I realize that Z-wave seems to be less popular than WiFi now, but I’m not even seeing WiFi smokes. What gives with this?
I have a mix of older and newer units, some of which I got on Ebay. I will do a more thorough inventory of what is falling off and see if there is any correlation. Good to know your experience, thanks.
