App not updating location after a while

Hi there,

I have a very frequent issue: After I install the app on a persons smartphone, I can see the users location in Home Assistant. After a while, this stops working, the person always has the last location when it worked. Only workaround I discovered is to reinstall the app, then it works again.

On Android this happened so frequently that I stopped caring at one point. When I switched to Apple, it seemed that the problem is gone. But now after a few weeks, my wife’s location stopped updating again.

I don’t get why and would love to know if there is another way to make that working again than reinstalling the HA app on the phone….

Typically, on Android, it depends on the battery optimisations applied to the HA app.
If the location doesn’t update after actually opening the app, it’s something else, though.

How long is a while and are they using the app at all? I know on Android, by default it periodically revokes permissions for apps that haven’t been actively used for a while (I think like a month or so?).

After a while means sometimes it works two weeks, sometimes 3 months but at some point it breaks.

I am not on Android any more, we both switched to iPhone but that behaviour persists.

We both use the app many, many, many times a day.

Currently mine is working and never stopped since installing but my wife’s stopped again and it does not update when she uses the app, too.
