After d Hi all,
I just read a teardown on SmartHomeScene that confirms what’s inside the Aqara FP2: it’s based on an ESP32-WROOM-32U and uses Texas Instruments’ IWR6843 60–64 GHz mmWave radar
The IWR6843 powers these impressive capabilities:
- Detects up to 5 people
- Offers 30 customizable zones
- Features 120° field of view, effective up to 8 m
- Enables multi-person tracking and fall detection
The real takeaway? The breakthrough isn’t exotic hardware it’s smart software. Aqara took widely available chips ESP32 and IWR6843 and built refined firmware that delivers room-level presence detection, zoning, and fall alerts without needing cameras.
It’s proof that in IoT, true innovation often lies in bridging standard hardware with exceptional software. With open platforms like ESPHome, anyone could build comparable solutions if they nail the firmware.
Curious if others are experimenting with ESP32 + TI IWR6843 or mmWave sensors. Thoughts?
