Aqara P1 - do I need a presence sensor instead?

As a newbie to home assistant thought I’d start very easy with a Simple turn the light on if motion detected via my aqara P1 and turn off the lights when no motion detected after a 5 min delay. All Zigbee setup with a candeo light switch.

The problem I’m finding is if I sit still then the no motion trigger kicks in after whatever delay I’ve set and the lights go out.

But as I’m still in the room that’s not ideal. I’m just sitting still watching TV but I want the light to stay on till I leave.

Would I be right in thinking the only way the lights will stay on when I’m in the room and only go off when I leave is if I buy a presence sensor rather than use a motion sensor?

I can see a motion sensor occupancy rule in home assistant but I can’t get it to trigger with the Aqara P1 only standard motion sensor rule works with the P1.

The short answer is yes. The long answer is maybe. Presence sensors like the Aqara PH2 are a lot more expensive and require external power meaning room placement can be an issue. If you’ve got a smart TV integrated with HA, or it’s on a smart plug, can you just not turn the light off due to no-motion if the TV is on? Alternatively, cheap ESP devices can tell what room you’re in using Espresense.

Can you connect your TV to Home Assistant? Then you can turn the lights on when there’s motion or the TV is on, and only turn them off if there’s no movement for 5 minutes and the TV is off.
