Are .bin backups encrypted?

All my backups in the Home Assistant Cloud are encrypted, and also the local ones. When I click download, it downloads a .bin file. Just to be sure, is this file encrypted? I want to save it to some places and I need to have the confirmation that its encrypted

Hello vespuccio,

The answer is maybe. You set this up here:
Open your Home Assistant instance and show an overview of your backups.

Go tobackup settings, then here (This System):

if it says encryption is turned on, then when I download, it downloads encrypted as well?

I am under the impression that you can have the local copy stored as encrypted or not. I am not an expert, but that is my impression.
I would read the DOCS over if you want to know more.

the local and the cloud ones are encrypted, I just need to know that when I click download, itś encrypted. There s no mention of this in the docs

Good thing it’s not mentioned anywhere.

Yes. Click on the gear icon to turn encryption off or on.

OP- I don’t know why you are getting a bin file. My backups are tar files.

tar -xf Automatic_backup_2025.2.4_2025-03-17_17.54_34233619.tar

then

tar -xzf homeassistant.tar.gz
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

suggesting itś encrypted
