I'm a bit frustrated with home assistant after this 2026.06 update.
I've noticed, that if I delete and re-add a device to home assistant, or simply click recreate entity IDs, the area gets appended to the entity ID.
This seems awfully counterintuitive. I was taught to set up all automations via entities, rather than devices. This provided flexibility. If a device broke, you could add another one just by keeping the same entity ID. I've come to rely on this philosophy.
One of my DIY esphome devices kicked the bucket today. I made a new one, went to add it, and none of my automations were linked. The entity IDs were all messed up, having the area appended. I quickly removed the area, and reset the entity IDs, and I was good.
While its mildly annoying my device doesn't have an area, I'd rather keep the sensible entity IDs I chose, and allow my automations to remain unedited.
But this frustrated me. Does this mean, going into the future, I am either required to stop using areas, or fix all my automations? For every new device??
I'm a bit confused - am I too old fashioned for preffering to use entity IDs in my automations? Why is there no way to disable this feature??
Don't blame you, but there might be a way to work around this until users are given the option to include or omit the area from the device name.
Don't select an area when creating a device. Go back in & add the area to the device after it's been created. Note that this is untested, but it should work (unless they change it so the device starts to include no_area in the name )
