Description:
Managing areas, devices, and entities in Home Assistant could be significantly improved with a dedicated “Area Manager” that provides an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Instead of manually assigning devices and entities through dropdowns or YAML, users could simply drag and drop them into areas. Additionally, areas should be assignable to floors in the same way.
Proposed Features:
- Introduce an “Area Manager” section in the Home Assistant UI.
- Drag and drop support for:
- Assigning devices/entities to areas.
- Moving areas between floors.
- Bulk selection for moving multiple items at once.
- Visual hierarchy: Display floors → areas → devices/entities in a tree structure.
- Search & filter: Quickly find specific devices or areas.
- Optional: Floor view – a top-down representation of floors and their areas.
Benefits:
Faster & more intuitive management for smart homes with many devices.
Better organization by grouping areas into floors.
More user-friendly experience, especially for new users.
Clearer overview of the smart home structure.
Example Use Case:
- A user installs multiple new devices and wants to quickly assign them to the correct areas by dragging them into place.
- A user restructures their home layout and moves areas (e.g., “Garage”) to a new floor (“Basement”) with a simple drag action.
Would love to see this implemented!
