Assistance with Integrating ProLiant DL370 into Smart Home System

Hello,
I need some help. Someone refered me to this forum Assistance with Integrating ProLiant DL370 into Smart Home System - Chat - Surety Support Forum
I recently acquired a ProLiant DL370 server and was wondering if anyone here has experience using it in a smart home setup. I’m considering utilizing it as a local server for managing smart home devices, possibly running Home Assistant or similar software.

Here are my main questions:

  1. Are there any specific challenges or limitations when integrating a ProLiant DL370 for smart home automation purposes?
  2. Is this server overkill for a medium-sized smart home (approximately 25 devices)?
  3. Do you have recommendations for software or best practices for optimizing its performance in this context?

I’d love to hear about your setups, experiences, or any advice you can share. Thanks in advance for your help!

I run a HP Proliant ML350P G8 server for my home lab which I acquired second hand.
Its a bit of an overkill for just Home Assistant but I have Proxmox installed and run Home Assistant as a VM along side a number of other VMs such the Immich Photo server, WordPress and Wireguard.

So long as you have somewhere to place the server where its noise won’t bother you then it should be fine. HP Proliant servers are not the quietest of machines.

Having Home Assistant running as a VM has many pluses as you can take backups and snapshots of the VM allowing you to quickly recover if an update goes south.
