Create a setting that we can configure The backup so that The switch “Automatic backup before update” is turned on by default.
Absolutely. The current default of off is annoying to me because I don’t always remember to enable the setting when I do an update of whatever is being updated. This also was the default before the end of the year revamp of the backup system.
I’ve got the same issue.
In the meantime is there some way to hack this to make it default on? E.g., something I can do in tampermonkey, or in some hidden yaml file somewhere?
Agree, an option in yaml that anyone who knows what they are doing can set to backup as default. Before this change it was always on, which I think is sensible before each update. Right now I often forget to switch it on and although I have the backup from last night I still would prefer the most recent situation from before the update started to restore in case something does go wrong.
I don’t think I have ever needed it in the roughly 3 years I’m working with HA but backups are important.
How about just making the slider do something? Apparently my instance has not been taking backups since January, despite the slider being on and updates being the most likely time for things to go wrong.
Now I get to split my weekend between this board and rebuilding my Home Assistant instance from the ground up since the latest ZWave update killed the entire house, and apparently the backups I thought I was doing don’t exist.

These updates don’t do anything. If they’re created at all, they’re wiped out by the automatic backup and retention settings.
If you’re manually turning on that slider, they need to be considered MANUAL backups, yet the count of manual backups is always ZERO.
With a backup schedule turned on and daily by default, this ensures that it’s near impossible to recover from a problem, including a bad update. The daily backup will just create another copy of the problem and any good backups will be purged.
SMH, the whole automated backup solution destroyed the usefulness of backups.
