Backup restore, how to?

Hello,

I have my home assistant running on Synology NAS a dbackups done on several locations including Nabu CASA.
1 hour ago, I have tried a dashboard modification using AI where he asked to copy a file under www folder, what I did, and add a resource in the dashboards.
As the dashboard finally wasn't what I expected, I decided to :

  1. Delecole the Dashboard Resource
  2. Delete the file under www

since then, my HA is not accessible anymore (interface is not displayed anymore)
What should I do to restore the backups I have ?
I am completely lost on how to reinstall my latest beckup in here.

Edit, I was able to find my backup.tar file on Nabu Casa, what is next ?

Many thanks !!

Do a complete fresh install and restore to that.

AI is great, but blindly following it will cause probably just cause issues.

It's explained here: Restoring a backup

You are right, I did not blindy follow, I just deleted a file from the www which I had copied before, but I tohught I broke something doing this because my HA became unavailable for 20 minutes.
all is ok now but I better be prepared next time in case I need a backup restaure.

I also assume as you state I would have to reinstall freshly that they are some pre-requisites like using the same hostname as in original installation or other stuff like that right ?

Many Thanks !

No just do a fresh install and on the onboarding page pick restore, load your backup file and all will be restored hostname and account details etc, It can take a very long time though especially if running a big setup on an RPi or similar.

Hello,
You’re actually in a good situation the backup.tar is the key.

I suggest you :

Open Home Assistant → Settings → System → Backups
Click Upload Backup
Select your backup.tar from Nabu Casa
Once it appears, click it and choose Restore → Full restore

Oh and before doing anything else make sure you have downloaded the backup Encryption key and kept it somewhere safe, preferably at least 3 places.

Yeah, I downloaded that key.
My backups are done on Nabu Casa cloud and OneDrive

Thanks a lot, not needed finally, but idea is indeed I would have to reinstall the HA on my Virtual machine on the Synology NAS and then select the Backup restore option.

does you synology offer some kind of backup facility for the VM? I have no idea as never used one, but that would be by far the best way to restore. Quicker and easier.

I use proxmox and have used the backup and restore in proxmox a few times, quick and easy.

A HA Restore with some AddOns (Apps) included can take hours and will not show any progress bar. A NAS restore could do the same much faster and will show the progress, and therefore causing less stress which is not unimportant in such a situation.
