Backup Restore VM from CLI

Hi All,

Still learning.

My Home Assistant has stopped booting. I’m running it on VirtualBox on an old MacMini. Its worked well for 6 months+ but for some reason its stopped booting.

Not really sure what to share that will help people help me. I don’t want to go back to rebuilding the system, but if that’s what I need to do then I will.

As everyone, I have spent a lot of time adding devices and setting up integrations and automations… I’m gutted it’s not worked for a week or so, we rely on the system to make life better

The system just says waiting for supervisor to startup. I have searched the internet and have tried things I think might fix the problem.

Not sure if this is relevant from the logs:
00:00:09.488943 SMEP - Supervisor Mode Execution Prevention = 0 (1)
00:00:09.488953 SMAP - Supervisor Mode Access Prevention

I have built a new VM and tried to restore from the original VMs .tar file but can’t find the backup on the system not sure if I’m looking in the right place or if I can download the file directly on to my Mac to point the new VM at.

I can see number of backups in the /mnt/data/supervisor/backup and have tried to restore and just get an error that says supervisor needs access to the internet.

Help!!!

Thanks in advance

I have decided to start again… lets hope what I have learned will make a better system with better backups

Hello Lee26,

With the install being a VM, you could also likely snapshot the VM file and have a quick complete backup for next time.

thank you for the advice much appreciated… I obviously need to look at my backup config :-).

I pay for home assistant cloud and I hadn’t backed up there.

Lesson learned onwards and upwards.

Best Wishes
