Best TV brand for HASS?

Hi everyone,

I hope you are having an amazing day.

I searched over the web quite extensively but I cannot come a good conclusion which TV brand works best with HASS.

What I would need from a TV is to be able to turn it on over WI-FI.

My current setup for all TVs at home ( 1xStarlight, 1axTCL, 1xHitachi ) is basically to turn them on with a Broadlink hub and then use custom remotes that I built in the HA dashboard to control them ( except for the input button for some reason the change input commands don’t work and I have to send query to Google to change the input over chromecast for all TVs )

The input and not being able to turn them on is very annoying to me and would like to replace all TVs basically ( It is time anyways ).

I have read good things about Sony, Samsung and LG but I still cannot conclude which of those could be turned on and practically allow full control over WI-FI.

Any suggestions are appreciated and please accept my apologies if this is a question that was asked a million times.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Best Regards,
Angel

Two LG televisions here at home, and the downstairs/living room TV is network-connected. Using the LG API, it’s entirely controllable from the Home Assistant page on our smart phones or laptops, or even from HA automations. The simple interface we use is shown below. There are much more beautiful examples around the forum, but I wanted something simple, straightforward, and effective. Defining Helpers for the individual API functions worked well.

LG is pretty well integrated, but what is ore important is that the TV is kept updated with apps in the future.
My 2016 LG can still get updated and new apps, so I can still stream Netflix, Paramount and whatever else there are of streaming services through the TV.

Hi Fred,

Thank you very much. So for your network connected TV, you could turn it On and switch the input while the TV is on Wi-FI ? Or is it a wired connection ?

Thank you for your answer in advance.

It is connected with BOTH LAN and WiFi. My general experience was the WiFI connection was not available when the TV is turned off, so LAN cable is preferred.

The Sony Bravia series has good support in HA as well. I have mine wired as well, but at one point I had it on WiFi and was able to turn it on via HA. The trick is going into settings and having the TV not go into the deepest sleep mode. It means more power usage when it is “off,” but you can control in over the network in that state.

To turn TVs on you generally need to send a WoL magic packet.
This works pretty reliable on wired connection.

On wireless connections the TV need to keep the wireless connects connected when it is turned off.
It is possible technologically today, but you need both a TV and an AP that support this and especially the APs hard to find cheap models with feature included, so it is highly likely you will not get it to work over WiFi.

I have an older samsung TV and the ads got so bad I disconnected it from Wifi. It is aging now and if I replace it, I honestly just want a good monitor. Chromecast and fireTV are much better “smart TV” interfaces than anything that comes integrated, IMO. And it works well in HA. At least for what I want. I don’t want to replace the remote (Google TV can already let me use my ohone as a remote, but the physical one is better). I want to dim the lights when I start a show or remind me when I’ve been watching Youtube for a long time.

Thank you very much. I will look into the series further then.
