grap a waveshare esp32c6 from amazon…
and a 5 terminal hmmd (high microwave motion detector with 4 terminals (3v3 gnd tx rx out)…
connect em up to your esp dev board thingy… (im using pins gpio10+gpio11 for uart) dont use the ‘out’ pin on the hmmd, thats your binary, thats boring) just 3v3, gnd, and your uart pins (tx rx)
get it to announce itself as a temperature sensor (so you can take a digital readig every 5 seconds without any hassle)
set yourself a guage on the dash and change units to metres…
you now have a constantly repeating presence sensor that just delivers range to target as opposed to a binary ‘occupied’ or ‘not occupied’ and you can potato forever without having to wave your arms to turn the trv back on again…

HA will find and instll your new device, use it wisely…
get 3 of the things spread around a bit and you could technically triangulate your targets exact position to within about a foot over about a 150 square foot area
