I’ve have a self built camper van. I’m recently discovered a few HA features that would make traveling in the camper much more enjoyable so I’ve finally decided to install HA inside my van.
My concern is hardware to actually run HA on. I figured I’d support HA and just buy a green, but I’m really worried about interior temps of the van in the heat of the summer as the green states it can only handle up to 104f. Outside temps can reach 115 and interior can be a raging infurno. Does anyone have some suggestions on what hardware I can run HA on without issue in temps like this? Here is a screen grab from my temp sensors installed on the van: Outside temps today are in the mid 90s and interior is at 113.
I’m only going to be running a handful of small items (Battery CAN controller, fan controller and hopefully an Aircon IR controller) so it doesn’t need to be super powerful. My battery bank is 24v so something that can run natively on DC would be great, thought I understand I’ll probably need to step down to a lower voltage. Thanks in advance!
I’m not about the camper life but I do have my HASS running in an extremely hot area in the summer time it’s easy to see the temp in the space at 110f. I’ve been running this was 3 years now. I’m using a raspberry pi 4b with a poe hat with fan on it and it’s using an external SSD for OS not a Micro SD. I do subscribe to Smarty Van on YouTube they covered server options pretty well a few weeks back https://youtu.be/v2MAdGnatO8?si=2FBPNZ5_goZawElG
Below are links to my setup parts:
Raspberry PI 4b
Waveshare Power Over Ethernet (PoE) HAT
StarTech SATA to USB Adapter
128GB SSD

Thanks for posting that video. I like the idea of the Seeed computer, but don’t need any of the AI acceleration so it seems like overkill. With that said, I love the wide input range up to 36v and the emmc. Not a fan of the fan.
It’s given me even more to think about. Thanks for this info.
Thanks again for all this info. I decided on going with an Odroid M1s with 8gb as it’s the same cpu as the green so hopefully performance is good enough. 64gb emmc plus m.2 slot for SSD. No wifi or bluetooth, but it will be hard wired. If I need bluetooth in the future I’ll just go with a dongle. I’ll report back in the fall to update this post to see if it survives
