Can I get an illumination sensor from the HA app or Fully Kiosk on an Android tablet?

I am using a 7" tablet with Fully Kiosk to build a clock and control panel to use on my nightstand. I want to adjust the tablet’s brightness so that it dims when the room is dark. I was hoping that either the HA app or Fully Kiosk would have an illumination sensor, but I can’t find one.

I can capture an image or a video stream from the tablet. If there isn’t a built-in sensor, is there some way to derive an illumination value from an image within HA?

I thought about just triggering dimming when all the lights are off and the sun has already set, but I would prefer to measure rather than assume.

You can but it might be disabled in the HA app. Go into the HA Companion app settings on the tablet and make sure the sensor is enabled.

There are a ton of sensors I can enable, including screen brightness and volume levels, but I don’t see a sensor for ambient light level to enable.

Does the tablet have that functionality…?

lol, I tried to install two different Android apps that read illumination on the tablet, and both said “you don’t have the hardware”. It’s a $35 tablet, so I shouldn’t be surprised that it is missing some features.

Thanks for the pointer.

no worries
