Okay, I’ve had my HA going for a couple years, it works fine…up until about 2 months ago. I installed it in a mini-PC, an x86 machine, using the HAOS method. It has a static address on my LAN, of course.
I only have a few automations going so far, and in fact, since i set up automated backups, I don’t even check it very often.
That’s when I noticed I was lagging behind in the updates of HA OS and HA Core, in addition to a few other modules.
When I try to upgrade/update them, I get a message that flashes by very quickly that “The host has no internet connection.” But the backups have been going to Google drive regularly. I even did a “speed test” on it (I have Comcast, so it wasn’t that great, even though I’m supposed to have a 1 GB connection). I KNOW it has intenert connection, so I don’t know why I’m getting this messge. In addition to sending backups to Google Drive, it sends them to a NAS on my LAN. The only reason it would reach the Internet would be if for some reason the router hd started blockin it, but I know it’s not since it reaches the Google Drive.
What can I do? I have rebooted it several times.
In fact, yesterday, the first time I rebooted it, I couldn’t find it because it came back up with a different address (DHCP). I kept changing it back in the network swettings, clicking on “Save” and rebooting, but it kept coming back up with the same DHCP addrews–even though I had set it for Static! Finally, after about 7 times, it came back correct. I have since rebooted it a few more times and it comes up correct each time. Everything looks good in the configuration, but I still get the "no Internet connection: message any time I try to update ANY modules.
Does anyone have a clue what’s going on? I’m at risk of losing access to a few things if I don’t upgrade the modules soon (like the electronic door locks).
Thanks in advance for any help.
DNS. It is always DNS.
Sometimes ISPs run malware filters and GitHub gets added to them a lot, if the filters are just set to auto-management.
Many times it is often just a DNS redirection on the domain, so other DNS servers, like 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google) can be used instead.
Sometimes it is DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) and then your are forced to take the fight with the ISP.
Test if you can access and download stuff from GitHub from your client machine.
I’ll take a guess. Pihole, Adguard, or something like that running?
Subscribed to a commercial VPN?
Well, I do have Pihole running. The DNS is redirected at my router,so it’s easy to change (more or less–but of course, Windows caches those things, so it takes many, many reboots to change).
But, in fact, once I got the network addrss straightened out, I WAS able to update the HA OS, but so far, nothing else.
I am seriously considering just scheduling a whole day (at least) where I scrub the drive, and start all over from scratch. I know I’ve made a few mistakes along the way when I was first learning, but as far as I know, I got them fixed–cuz everything was working fine.
My mistake was not keeping up with the updates.
I think I’ve gotten myself into a situation where changes made in one module are blocking another module from seeing the internet, or whatever. I was also getting error messages that the “Core was not loading.” That took several reboots to clear.
But before I scrub the Hard Drive and start over, I’ll try “turning off” the Pihole, just to see if that works. I don’t expect it to, but…who knows?
Funny that someone would guess that…
Thanks for the tips. I’ll let you know what happens.
ipconfig /flushdns at command prompt will clear Windows’s DNS cache
I had exactly NO PROBLEMS setting the IP address when I installed it.
As I have stated, it has been running fine for a couple of years.
I suspect my mistake was letting it get behind on updates the past few months
I don’t know what was going on with the business with the IP address when I rebooted it, but once I got that fixed, it has been fine through a bunch of reboots.
I was able to update the HA OS, but I cannot update the HA Core.
I did try taking the Pihole out of the picture, but it didn’t change anything. I didn’t think it would, becaue of the error message that I’m getting (see below).
i have HA Core v 2025.3.2 in it now, it says 2026.10.1 is available. I’m pretty sure that the “Addon Mgr” is a part of the Core, and the message I keep getting, when I try to update anything, whether the Core or any Addon, is that the “execution is blocked by the Addon Mgr because there is no Internet Connection.”
What I think is that there is some kind of change in software somewhere that doesn’t manifest until down the line, like when versions are too far apart. Then one thing blocks another. Or something like that.
Anyway, it looks like I’m going to have to just bite the %&*^$ bullet, and reformat the disk and start over! Gaaaahhhh!
Incidentally, as this is a mini-PC (x86) with 2 drives in it, I have one drive that is very large (~1-2 TB) that I wanted to use for video, like for Frigate. or similar, to do object and facial recognition.
I’m not a linux expert, so can anyone tell me how I’ll be able to mount the other hard drive after I reinstall the entire HAOS?
Cuz, I’m getting ready to add a camera to the system.
I noticed something else. Sometimes, I have noticed in the past that HACS didn’t load–yet I have 2 things that are components of HACS that run just fine all the time (Google backups and a ZHA switch blueprint).
So far, all I have to do is reload Home Assistant, and it’s fine again. However, after many reboots and reladds, I still get an error message that HACS can’t load.
I tried to find it in the Devices setion, it said it needed to “be reconfonfigured.” Basically, the few bits of info were already filled in, so all I had to do was click on Submit. But it still couldn’t load. According to the Logs, it’ll “try again in 15 minutes.” (That was 35 minutes ago, still no HACS.)
I’ve been copyimg various yaml files into a directory on my laptop to save time when i reinstall this whole mess. But I have a blueprint for a Sonoff Switch (via ZHA) that controls 3 lights, and I don’t remember where I found it, and I can’t find it now. I have found the yaml file for it. but I doubt that’s all there is to it, and I really don’t know how to install it with out going through the UI.
I’m screwed. WTF happened?!
HACS just install the integrations.
It has nothing to do with actually running it.
HACS gets its integration list and updates from GitHub
Google drive backup and ZHA switch do not use GitHub to function.
Okay, that explains why the integrations still run. But it doesn’t tell me how to get HACS back.
In the past, HACS has’t started before, but all I had to do was relaid HA. But that’s not working any more.
I tried to reinstall it, but I got a message “Only one instance of HACS is supported.” Even though there’s no evidence of it any more, except in the logs stating that it didn’t start.
