I have been trying all day to get HAOS to load on this machine. Using most recent stable version.(24.04.3) Here is what I have done and where I am at. I think the issue is with my BIOS.
Loaded ubuntu on USB , made it bootable and then tried to load it on my machine. It would not recognize my USB (at first). I finally got it to boot by rebooting with USB in port, getting the no boot drive, then reboot again and go directly into BIOS, on the second boot it would load a USB drive under UEFI boot. Once it was labeled in the UEFI boot section and I checked marked it, I could boot to ubuntu.
after that, I did the TRY ubuntu and then reimaged to HAOS, the load up was good. Once I rebooted it would give me the âno boot driveâ . In my BIOS it didnât show any boot devices under UEFI. Since the USB drive was pulled out it didnât show up either.
I also tried loading ubuntu onto HD and then doing the HAOS reimage , same issue, on reboot it wont find boot drive. NOTE: I had issue with even booting to ubuntu after I loaded it on the HD. I got it to boot to ubuntu by doing the double boot, a ubuntu drive showed up on second reboot and once selected I could boot to ubuntu, still no luck getting HAOS to boot.
I then went into the BIOS and it has a boot option tab under UEFI, inside there there are four files: GRUB.CFG / BOOTX64.EFI / BOOTIA32.EFI / GRUBENV
I loaded BOOTX64.EFI and I could get HAOS to load in Supervisor mode, no graphical interface. I donât know how to use Supervisor mode to get it to the OS!!
As I stated i think it is a BIOS issue. How do I get the BIOS to recognize the HAOS?
One other caveat, on the last check of my BIOS I found another file in the Boot Options, it is rauc.dbâŚanyone know what that is, it doesnât let me boot to HAOS when selected as an option.
First you need to make sure SecureBoot is disabled.
Secondly 24.04.3 is definitely not the most recent stable version.
HAOS v16.2 would be the most recent stable HAOS version.
HA Core 2025.10.4 would be the most recent stable HA Core version.
Sorry that was for the ubuntu version. I downloaded the latest HAOS off of their site. .There is no secure boot in my BIOS, this is an 2012 laptop, Iâm surprised it had UEFI. I have looked over it several times and nothing on secure boot.
What the line you asked means, is when I go into BIOS under UEFI there is a tab âadd boot optionâ, under there I have an option for EFI/boot/bootx64.efi. When I load this up I was able to get HAOS to load to âSupervisorâ mode.
Sorry I am new with this but I cant seem to figure out how to do find it on the web using my home computer. I type in homeassistant.local:8123 and it cant be found! I was thinking it is the laptop not on wifi. The other thing is on the laptop it isnât showing an IP address when HA supervisor is loaded.
There is no default wifi in HAOS. You need to connect with a lan cable to your router. You can then run it wifi after install but it is not supported or recommended. And I have no idea how you do that.
If the IP is not showing you have no network connection.
Well I have learned more but I cant figure out how to accomplish my objective, which is to use one laptop run an OS, which can do VMs and have HAOS on the same laptop. I just experimented with Proxmox but I donât think it will do that. Anyone have a simple way to do this? Right now I may experiment with windows and Virtual box to see if it can all be done on one computer.
Ok perfect, if that works for you that is the most important part. Since you are using a laptop, donât forget to turn off any sleep modes or all your VMâs will be suspended.
Yes, but the issue is Proxmox doesnât have a browser so I have to log on via web on another computer to see everything and configure proxmox. I want to be ale to use only the laptop to do all of it. Iâm a newbie at all this so I thought I was missing how to do it butâŚso far I cant do that.
One question I have is how often are you in the HAOS for configuration and just basic reviews. My idea is not to have my main computer tied up every time I want to look at the HAOS and see what my stuff is doing, thatâs why I want it all on one laptop. From my understanding the laptop will have proxmox and HAOs loaded on it but access will only be via web on another computer?
You can run a virtual machine on a Linux or windows host.
To your question:
It isnât the best option for a couple of reasons. Apart from a laptop being perfectly fine hardware, it also by default uses the screen and needs to be placed somewhere where no person or animal touches the keyboard. You might get more âpunchâ out of hardware in a smaller power envelope if you go to dedicated hardware.
However all of this doesnât really matter: you want to run HA and have the laptop available. Everyone on this forum will want to help you and do it in such a way that it will be most effective.
Back to what you propose : yes you can run an OS and a virtual machine on it. The proposals you see coming by are hypervisors, types of software dedicated to running multiple operating systems as virtual machines. Examples of hypervisors are Proxmox, Xen, VMware esxi, and others. The hypervisors will allow multiple VMâs to talk to the same hardware and offer a way to manage them. Either though the CLI or a user-interface.
If you run an Operating System (OS) and then want to run VMâs with a (local) graphical interface, it will do the same thing with the exception that the VM first passes through the OS before reaching the hardware. It will add a small computational overhead.
As I understand your requirements however, this is negligible: the ease of use it will give you in running the VM and be able to get familiarized with a whole array of (very exciting and geeky, I must add) technologies you arenât yet very familiar with.
So go ahead, deploy it and start using HA, cause that too will be a very exciting journey.
I personally understand what you are wanting to accomplish but out of respect I am going to give it to you straight ⌠that is not how it is designed to be administrated.
If Proxmox and HAOS is installed and operational on your network kudos to you for getting this far. Well done.
Thanks for your honest assessment. I have installed proxmox and played with it , I actually havenât installed HA but I have under Linux and it should be easy. I stopped because proxmox didnât do what I wanted. Can you give me an idea on how much time is spent on the HA OS to tweak and review your setup, is it a lot? i use my computer for my business and the HA will be used for home automation and security. I do want to set my cameras to record. Kind of thinking I would like to see the camera output at a glance, between two and four cameras. or rolling screen.
Thanks for the info, got to digest some of it. but good explanation for a beginner. I am looking forward to getting my HA up and running. hopefully I can do everything I want âŚand more.
