Can't get matter to work on Tapo S505 switch

I am using HAOS with my nest thermostats; configuring thru matter was very simple – after installing them with my phone and google home, all i had to do was add a matter device in HA and put in the pairing code that was generated by the thermostat.

So, when I got a Tapo S505 switch, I thought it would be a simple matter (sorry for the pun) to add it to my HA.
I provisioned the tapo switch using the tapo app and my smartphone. This went well, and they work fine thru the app.
I cannot get HA to recognize the pairing code; it just times out / not found.
Tapo and the HA are on the same LAN.

I also tried Google home with same result.
I also tried Alexa app with same result.

The tapo instructions for matter said something to the effect of it only pairs for 15 minutes; so I made sure to complete everything well within that time. I would hard-reset device and setup again in tapo app so it would be fresh (it only takes a minute or two).

Seeing as how i can’t get it to work on HA, goog home, and alexa – i feel like there’s something obvious I don’t understand about matter. Suggestions welcome.

Hey,
I’m in the same boat here. I have a S515 dimmer that work well with the Tapo app but I can’t reach it via Google Home nor HA.
There is the little left button to make a “reset” if you press it >5 seconde it will start blinking green/orange and start pairing mode but no luck. I’v been trying it >3 times tonight and no luck.

With the Tapo app, I was able to make a FW upgrade to 1.0.4 ( i think ), nothing changed after that.

Did someone already made a Tapo switch/dimmer work with something else than the official app ?

It seems really weird because they explicitly claim to work both on google home, and alexa; yet I can’t get either to work.
by the way, i posted the story on Tapo subreddit but got no responses, and that seems to be fairly popular sub(?)

I ended up using HA’s Tapo integration and setting up the device with the Tapo App on a Wifi that does not communicate with the outside world. Once the device is on the Wifi, use the Tapo integration, enter the ip address of the switch and done.

I have 2 other dimmers sitting in a box. I hope the provisionning will also work for them.

hey that’s interesting… when i tried the integration called Tapo, it directed me to the tp-link smart home integration; and then it asks for a user/account – is that what you did?

Yup.
I used my tp-link creds ( Tapo is basically tp-link as far as I know ).
But I am certain the device is on a network without internet access, and with HA you xan manually turn off the orange LED on the switch.
I think the credentials are set in the device’s web server and is required to control it properly :person_shrugging:

thanks for clarifying.
Yes, that worked for me as well.

So the mystery remains that you an I (at least) cannot get the darn thing to work on matter.

I don’t understand IPV6 and it gets me wondering if that has something to do with my matter problem… AFAIK it’s all turned on and enabled.
I wonder why, e.g. in my router there are DOZENS, 73 at last count, of active DHCPv6 leases for the tapo device??
