Can't see state of Chromecasts after updating HA

My instance of HA no longer sees the correct state of either of my two Google Chromecast devices after updating both HA Core and OS. The media player entity state is stuck as “off”, whereas before I would have an entity say Playing, Paused, etc. When I go to Settings → Devices I see an entity under “Controls” with a single power button icon. Clicking this begins casting Home Assistant to the TV. For some reason it seems like Home Assistant Cast is the only option here now and other entities I had earlier are missing.

This worked fine prior to updating. I went from Core 2025.5.3/OS 15.2 to Core 2026.3.1/OS 17.1.

The Chromecasts themselves also work fine. I can cast from my phone to either one, it’s just HA won’t see the status of them. They are on the same subnet as HA.

Here’s what I tried to fix:

  • Removed both devices (they both get detected again on their own, but with the same problem)
  • Removed the integration itself, rebooted HA, re-added it, rebooted HA again
  • Full reboot of HA system

I am also getting the message “failed to unload” on the integrations screen for the Google Cast integration. Also, the ‘reload’ option for the integration seems to be missing whereas it appears for other integrations.

I am running on Home Assistant Green.

Any help appreciated!

I have somewhat of the same issue but not sure to the same extent.
With a mixture of Google Audio speakers, Google Minis (set up as stereo) and Chromocast, I have noticed that some show as OFF in HA. However, my automations to cast radio stations to them seem to be working.

I have exactly the same issue since updating to 2026.3.1.

Same here, also since updating to 2026.3.

In previous versions, if I go to Developer tools > States, and looked at the state of a media_player playing a camera feed, I would see lots of attributes, a state of “Paused” (which was a bit odd, but that didn’t bother me) but crucially also the media_source. My automations would use the media_source to restore the original feed after making an announcement on the media_player.
But now the state just says “Off” and there are no attributes at all, so all my automations that rely on reading the state of the media_player no longer work.

Same issue here

Have these issues been observed with the ‘old’ Chromecast Audio devices as well or is it limited to Google Audio speakers, Google Mini, and Chromecast TV devices?

Just checking, if I should delay updating to 2026.3.X due to that.

So far I have personally only experienced it with Google Displays (nest hub 2nd gen).
