Hi everyone,
I wanted to share an update on CasaBoard.
Some of you may have seen the original version when I first launched it back in October (I originally posted it on the Home Assistant Facebook group. Since then, I’ve taken on board a lot of the feedback I received, especially around privacy, control, and how a dashboard platform like this should fit into the Home Assistant ecosystem.
As a result, CasaBoard has now been rebranded and significantly improved, with a much stronger focus on being:
- Privacy-first
- Local-first
- Easy to use
That shift has influenced both the architecture and the product direction.
Privacy and architecture
One of the biggest concerns people rightly have with anything connected to Home Assistant is: where is my data going, and what credentials are being stored?
With CasaBoard, the aim is to keep that to an absolute minimum.
- Only dashboard metadata is stored on the server
- Authentication is handled securely for login
- Your Home Assistant credentials are never stored on the server
That was a very important design decision for me, because I know a lot of Home Assistant users want flexibility and convenience, but not at the expense of privacy or control. Read more on the security page.
What CasaBoard is
CasaBoard is a dashboard-building platform designed for Home Assistant users who want a cleaner, more flexible way to create and manage dashboards.
The core idea is to make dashboard creation easier and more visual, while still giving you enough control to build something that feels polished and personal.
Key features
Drag-and-drop dashboard builder
CasaBoard includes a visual drag-and-drop builder , so you can assemble dashboards more easily without needing to manually piece everything together in a more rigid way.
This makes it much quicker to experiment with layouts, move sections around, and design a dashboard that suits the way you actually use your smart home.
Dashboard editor
There is a dedicated dashboard editor that lets you build and refine pages visually. The goal is to make the editing experience feel intuitive, especially for people who want more freedom over the look and structure of their dashboard.
Rather than being locked into a single static arrangement, you can edit and evolve your setup over time.
Flexible layouts
CasaBoard supports different layouts , so you are not limited to a one-size-fits-all dashboard structure.
Whether you want something minimal, information-dense, tablet-friendly, wall-panel friendly, or better suited for desktop use, the platform is designed to let you structure pages in a way that works for your environment.
Sidebars and page structure
You can build dashboards with sidebars and structured page sections , which makes it easier to organise content and navigation.
That is especially useful if you want to separate areas such as:
- lighting
- climate
- security
- media
- room-based controls
- system/status information
The aim is to make dashboards feel more like a complete interface rather than just a collection of cards.
Theming and colour schemes
CasaBoard also supports theming and colour customisation , so you can make dashboards feel consistent with your setup, space, or personal preference.
This includes working with different colour schemes , visual styles, and an overall theme direction that makes the dashboard feel more cohesive.
A lot of people want their Home Assistant dashboard to look good on a wall-mounted tablet or shared household device, not just function well, and that visual side is something I wanted CasaBoard to support properly.
Cost
CasaBoard offers a free forever plan, and paid subscriptions which you can learn more about on the website.
Why I built it
I built CasaBoard because I wanted a better way to create Home Assistant dashboards that are:
- easier to design
- more visually flexible
- privacy-conscious
- practical for real-world daily use
I know Home Assistant users care deeply about control, self-hosting principles, and ownership over their setup, so I wanted CasaBoard to move in that direction rather than against it.
The feedback from the first launch was genuinely useful, and it directly shaped the rebrand and the product improvements. So this is not just a cosmetic update - it is a much more considered version of the platform.
Looking for feedback
I’d really appreciate feedback from the community, especially from people who care about:
- dashboard usability
- privacy
- local-first principles
- tablet and wall-panel interfaces
- flexible smart home UI design
If you saw CasaBoard previously, this version is built with those earlier comments in mind.
Happy to share more and answer questions.
