Chromecast & thank you

You may not be aware, but Google blew it, letting their certificate used for Chromecast Audio and Chromecast v2 expire yesterday. This made all of these devices worldwide suddenly fail. Yet another example of why you want local devices that operate without dependency on the internet.

The good news? I can still cast to my Chromecast Audios via Home Assistant.

Thank you, Nabu Casa and the Home Assistant community for making such an amazing platform, and empowering people to have control over their home and the devices in it.

Thanksā€¦
I noticed that too.
I just didnā€™t know if it was completely done or if it would be fixed soon.

Sadly there is no real local alternative.

Looks like setting up a group with all my Chromecast devices in Music Assistant and adjusting some scripts (mostly for volume control of Google Home/Chromecast-based groups) got me almost back to where I was before.

Hope that Google sorts this one out quickly.

If they wonā€™t connect because of a certificate on the Chromecast device itself that is bad, then there might not be a way to update the firmware with new certificates. If it is only the Google servers needing a new certificate, then they can fix it.

Iā€™ve been using plexamp a lot lately as a client. Iā€™ve been debating trying to set up plexamp headless on Pi to see if itā€™s a possible replacement for my needs.

Iā€™d hoped to stick with Chromecast Audio until they physically failed but after this Iā€™m exploring alternativesā€¦

Donā€™t you think this was a planned certificate issue? As they wanted to get rid of them?

I doubt it. If they wanted to get rid of them, they would have just announced it. Googleā€™s ok with looking arrogant, but this looks like incompetence, and harms their brand and their future hardware sales, and Google hates looking incompetent.

Only took Google 4 days to admit thereā€™s a problem and theyā€™re working on itā€¦ Just received this to my inbox:

For the curious, that link points here

It seems the issue is resolved for those who did not factory reset the device.
Guess I need to wait longerā€¦

Thanks for the updates.

I didnā€™t even receive the email @solstyce9 posted yesterday, but Iā€™m not giving up hope (yet) that my devices will be fixed anyway. :crossed_fingers:

Iā€™ll post here when I see it happening. So far, all my devices still show up as ā€˜Offlineā€™ in the Google Home app.

All my devices are still showing offline in Google Home. I can still access them via Home Assistant, I just had to modify a few of my automations and scripts to add continue_on_error: true since I always turn on my Chromecast Audio player and pause a half second before starting a song or TTS since that helps reliability and that ā€œturn onā€ was failing and stopping it from continuing.

Took about 3h but now all 5 of my Chromecast Audios are back online - the Chromecast Video is still offline, though.

Took a little longer for my Chromecast Audios but eventually they did all come back online and seem to be working as before. Also still waiting for my Chromecast (video) to start working again.

Looking forward to testing plexamp headless and squeezebox lite as possible CCA replacements.
