Codex for Home Assistant: Chat UI, Assist integration, and tasks from automations

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a project that brings OpenAI Codex into Home Assistant, so you can ask it to work on your configuration, automations, scripts, and dashboards directly from HA.

Just as I was getting ready to post this, I came across @Kanu-Coffee’s project. Credit to them for their work, especially the browser verification features! There’s some overlap, but mine focuses on a dedicated chat interface and integration with Home Assistant actions, automations, and Assist, so I thought it was worth sharing too.

Chat directly inside Home Assistant

The web UI includes saved conversations, a resizable sidebar, mobile navigation, and light/dark themes. You can return to an earlier conversation and continue with its context, or start a fresh chat.

You can also choose the model and reasoning level for each conversation.

The chat preview uses demo conversations. This UI can either be opened from the app webUI, or you can easily add it to the HA side bar

Start tasks through Assist

The integration exposes Home Assistant actions for starting tasks, checking progress, cancelling work, and continuing conversations. You can use these in scripts and automations, or expose a script to Assist.

For example, you can ask Assist to make a dashboard change and get a Home Assistant notification when the task finishes or needs your input.

Other features

  • Task-result events that your automations can react to.
  • Sensors for task activity, authentication status, and account usage limits.
  • Account sign-in from the web UI.
  • An editor for /config/AGENTS.md, where you can give Codex instructions for your setup.
  • Web UI access through Home Assistant Ingress, without exposing a separate chat port.

Installation

The integration has been accepted into the default HACS catalog! Just open HACS, search for Codex, and download it. There is no custom repository to add in HACS.

The project also needs the Codex CLI Worker app/add-on, which runs Codex against your /config folder. Its app repository is added separately through the Home Assistant app store. The README includes the installation buttons and full setup instructions.

GitHub repository, screenshots, and installation instructions

I’d be happy to hear how people use it and what would make it more useful!
