Combining WiFi and Zigbee in automation rules

I’m currently using Shelly 2PM GEN4 switches to control roller shutters (shutters will be installed in a couple of weeks).

I’m using both connection possibilities: through WiFi as well as Zigbee (using Z2M).

To be sure that I’m always able to communicate with the devices, I’ve added both WiFi as well as Zigbee access to my automation rules, like so:

actions:
  - choose:
      - conditions:
          - condition: trigger
            id:
              - id_knop_up
        sequence:
          - action: cover.open_cover
            metadata: {}
            target:
              entity_id: cover.shelly_01_rolluik_keuken
            data: {}
          - action: light.turn_on
            metadata: {}
            target:
              entity_id: light.kleurlamp_bureau
            data:
              rgb_color:
                - 255
                - 0
                - 0
          - action: cover.open_cover
            metadata: {}
            target:
              entity_id: cover.rolluik_01_zigbee
            data: {}

As you can see, there are two cover.open_cover actions: one with WiFi (cover.shelly_01_rolluik_keuken) and one with Zigbee (cover.rolluik_01_zigbee).

Is this good practise to do it like this or can this cause a “fight” between the two protocols?

Best,
–Geert

Are you actually experiencing communication issues? I don’t think I would bother unless there was an actual issue.

Even if there aren’t direct clashes based on sending commands over both protocols, both are using the 2.4GHz frequency band, so there is the possibility that using both with just increase the level of RF interference in your home.

Well, it’s likely they are using the same chip, so for set-up and config tweaking I know you can enable WIFI at startup even if you are using Zigbee or Matter, but I would shut it down otherwise, unless you just use WIFI and skip the other protocols. Personally I have one of mine running WIFI, the other Zigbee that are gen4 in my setup today.

FWIW, I think I remember reading that on these, the Zigbee and BT share the same radio, not ZB and WiFi.
