I am trying to figure out which humidifier I can use and I really don’t know. Can you share me some recommendations?
Factors to choose:
It needs to be very silent device.
I want humidifier to turn off automatically when there is no water.
It can have (but doesn’t have to) ioniser build in
NO clean air functions. I am not interested in.
I can control this by home assistant, so I really don’t need humidity control in device. I even prefer to control this on my own. I can even turn power on / off, but then humidifier needs to be turned on after power on. So it can’t be turned off by default when power back.
I really can’t choose, because all devices don’t have this information. Thank you for help to discover devices which I can use.
PS I wish there will be a place to find compatible devices.
I just joined this community and I have the same exact questions as you do.
My main problem is that I can’t find a list of compatible humidifiers with Home Assistant.
Did you find any answers? Have you decided on a humidifier? How’s it working for you?
Even though I started checking this 30 minutes ago, you might have solved it already, or given up. After all, it wasn’t yesterday this post was started.
I started by doing a few quick searches for “zigbee humidifier” and got a lot of less accurate search hits. I also searched for “humidifier home assistant”, and didn’t get any answer, only more questions, as this post also started as a question.
There is no definition though, on what units that are compatible with home assistant, that all depends on how you have configured your home assistant. As I said, I searched for Zigbee, and if I had found a perfect option when doing that, I would have posted a fantastic tip for all others in the community, BUT that would be useful only for Zigbee users, not for HomeKit/tuya based on wifi.
The way to go is most likely to be a bit more general in our approach and search for humidifiers that “works with Google Home” or “works with Amazon Alexa”. That definitively increase the possibility of being able to control it with Home assistant. I bumped into this one when started to think like that. Since it is listed to work with google home/Alexa, and those can be integrated with Home assistant, it will most likely be possible to integrate this one directly to Home assistant as well. https://levoit.com/products/classic-300s-smart-ultrasonic-top-fill-cool-mist-humidifier
No conclusion have been made though, so ordering that one is on your own responsibility.
There is a description for how to integrate a humidifier with Home assistant, BUT no requirements are listed, so it is hard to know what humidifier to search for: Humidifier - Home Assistant
By the way, just an update here… I did get this working… granted, not the way I’d really like it though… here’s the story:
I did buy one of the Levoit humidifiers as mentioned above… I got the 600S on Amazon for $99 yesterday… and what I did was this:
Connect the device to WiFi via the VeSync app
Set the device to max everything… so on this device, the 3rd level of mist setting, as well as 80% target level
Connected the device to Alexa (so yes, this will need the cloud to work)
Create an Alexa “routine” that has the voice prompt “turn on the bedroom humidifier”
Create an input_boolean helper called “Bedroom Humidifier”
Created an automation that says “when the input boolean changes to off” then "play the routine ‘turn off the bedroom humidifier’
Created a “generic hygrostat” and set a humidity sensor I have in that room as the trigger and the input boolen as the device to control
Now when the humidity goes too low, it plays that routine through the alexa media player integration and sure enough, I’m able to turn the device on and off based on an external humidity reading…
I’d love to find ways to control the other settings, and it would be awesome if I could control it WITHOUT the cloud… but I don’t frequently lose internet where I am and either way, automated humidity control is not “essential”…
So it gets the job done… now I just have to see if this unit can actually bring the levels up in a badly dry room… if this LV600S doesn’t work, I’m looking at picking up a “Core 400S” or “Core 600S” which are both made for MUCH larger areas.
You can use the Philips devices. There are 2-in-1 purifiers and humidifiers but from what you write, you’re more interested in a dedicated humidifier, which Philips also offers.
To your questions
My 2-in-1 device AC2729 is very quiet, so I would expect the devices that just do humidifying to not be any louder
You can switch it off automatically with a simple HA automation that checks for the water level sensor
I’m not aware of any Philips devices with an ioniser, but I haven’t looked for that
The HU series seems to be just humidifying
You can use my custom integration for control. It’s not perfect as it provides a fan entity plus a humidifyer entity due to its history being primarily a fan integration but it gives you all functionality.
When I think about a “smart” humidifier, I’m wondering if we could simply do like I did with my heater and my coffee machine: A dump hardware attached on a ZigBee plug, the “smart” being delegated to HA based on one of our hygrometers already there.
Now the question is: can we find hardware dumb enough to activate only when powered ?
My 40 EUR Xiaomi Humidifier 2 lite (Xiaomi Humidifier 2 Lite - Xiaomi Global) does exactly that, you can even regulate the output it gives when powered. Idea was to plug it into Ikea Tretakt (if/as/when they are available).
It’s noisier than I like though, so I am looking at the Levoit range which are claimed to be sub 30db… Can those be run 100% locally?
I have two of the Classic 300S and they’re pretty quiet.
Currently using a custom VeSync integration, but it looks like the ‘official’ one is about to receive an update that will include humidifiers as well.
I got the 300S yesterday, still not quiet enough for sleeping next to it (but I am stickler for that, others might think it ok). Alright in the office I guess. Possibly I will try one of those horribly overprice Venta devices next - 22db ought to be bearable.
So far have not hooked it up to wifi (I do not really want questionable devices on it, only exception I make is for the Dreame robot and there is a soldering solution in sight). As far as using it in dumb mode, even auto is questionably, sitting on a 50cm shelf, I can only run it on low otherwise the fog eventually hits the floor.
It does not turn back on after power cycling, FWIW. If you want that, best to get a really dumb one. I assume that should be true for the cheapest Levoit, BTW.
I agree: some of these devices are trying too hard not be dumb
I don’t have any issues with my Levoit sitting on the floor or seeping while it’s on - lucky me, I guess.
And with our hard water, I can’t really use an evaporative one.
