Considering new install choice

My system suffered some massive crash last night… I woke to find Alexa not controlling lights, then found my HA web to not load, nor did my ZM instance. I quickly telnet-ed in and found myself in a login loop so I checked SSH and got an error that my HOME directories were missing.

I rebooted my server only to find that I guess my boot files are gone too so now I have nothing. And it’s my own fault for not having a full back-up. I have multiple instances of my HA configurations saved so I should be able to relatively quickly rebuild but I am left with 2 questions.

  1. WTH happened… ?
  2. Should I change my setup? This one is the main question I have.

I have been pretty tied to running HASS on Ubuntu via pc or my server (overkill) but originally ran on a Pi3. Whereas I am fairly comfortable with Ubuntu (at least related to HASS), I wonder if with the new HassIO if that would not be a better option.

That being said, are there any limitations to HassIO vs running in a venv Ubuntu?
In my previously working setup I utilized a zwave usb, multiple Wink, multiple Echo devices, Google Home (& RPiGH, a ZoneMinder instance, cloudMQTT, email/text notifications, alarm…

I am sure everyone has a personal preference but just curious.

I have an extra Pi3, SFF desktop, or the Server to utilize (although I think I’d like to not use the latter).
