Convert 2-way physical switch to 1-way and manage in software

Today I have a 2-way physical switch (both downstairs or upstairs can control a single light) and would like to make this smart. I’ve come across a few posts where folks look to be trying to install smart relays to maintain the physical switching aspect (e.g. Correct connection of Sonoff Smart Switches for a two-way switch), however I’d like a smart bulb I can dim, etc.

Referring to the “normal 2 way wiring” diagram I’m planning to:

  • Install SONOFF ZBM5 in place of the current switches
  • Connect L1 (red wire) & L2 (black wire) both into L1
  • Bypass the relays on both switches with them set to “on”
  • Control a smart bulb via HA or maybe Zigbee binding

To date I’ve only updated simple 1-way physical switches so wanted to get a little feedback on this approach before I go ahead.

Are you getting the US or EU version of zbm5?

EU/86 version. Is there a difference relative to 1-way vs 2-way?

For the us version, there’s inovelli with tons of features if you need to use with smart bulbs. They also plan to make one for EU version but that’s not out yet

Anyway, zbm5 should work fine with your setup with smart lights but they don’t support binding as of now and doesn’t look the buttons have additional actions (like multi press for dimming)

Another option is these tuya switches that you can flash with custom firmware via ota (enable binding, router mode, long press)
