Correct way to measure heat pump consumtion

hello all
I’ve a Shelly 3EM and want to measure the consumption of my heat pump, for this I add in the Energy dashboard the …shelly Phase A energy , B and C. (Add Consumption) Then doing a Google search I found another way to add in this Energy dashboard with a YAML template, I did it. But now I’ve two complete different values, and I’m not sure which one is more accurate…1 September one graph shows 10,2kwh the other one 26.8kwh

Thanks for you help

Hi, the difference between 10.2 kWh and 26.8 kWh is large enough that I would first check exactly what the two methods are measuring.

With a Shelly 3EM on a 3-phase heat pump, be careful when combining the three phases.
If you add Phase A + B + C energy in the Home Assistant Energy dashboard, those should be energy (kWh) entities, normally cumulative total / total_increasing sensors.

With the YAML method, check whether you’re summing power (W) and then integrating it into energy, or summing already accumulated energy (kWh) sensors.
Also check the units, device_class, state_class, whether the template resets, and whether import/returned energy is being handled correctly. A mistake there can easily cause double counting or a very different daily total.

I would compare the three individual Shelly phase-energy increases for 1 September with the YAML sensor’s increase over exactly the same period.

That should tell you quickly which calculation is producing the extra energy.

You could also give AION EMS Zeus a try.

I’m developing it for Home Assistant specifically around this kind of energy-data problem.
You can register the heat pump and map its power/energy entities, and Zeus uses Recorder evidence for device-level statistics and energy-flow analysis rather than simply assuming that a large cumulative value represents consumption for that day.

We’ve actually been working recently on cumulative-statistic handling and device-level energy attribution, so a Shelly 3EM + three-phase heat pump would be an interesting real-world system to test.

If you try it and the two measurements still disagree, I’d be interested to see the entity attributes and the YAML you are using.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m now using AION EMS Zeus, how can I add heat pump to Zeus dashbord?
