I’d like to share a custom integration I recently created called Events Calendar.

If you manage local events, recurring household schedules, or automations that depend on custom event helpers and are looking for easy to manage calendar entities in Home Assistant without relying on external cloud providers (like Google Calendar or Office 365), this integration makes it simple.

  • Local & YAML-driven: Define event categories and schedule lists directly in a local YAML file.

  • Granular Options Flow: Enable or disable specific event categories directly through the Home Assistant UI without touching code or restarting Core.

  • Lightweight & Fast: Uses local polling and standard Home Assistant calendar entities for seamless integration with dashboard calendar cards and automations.

:light_bulb: Example Use Case: Automated WLED Preset Switching

I originally built this to manage holiday and seasonal lighting automation cleanly:

  1. YAML Event Definition: I define custom holiday ranges (e.g., Halloween, Christmas, Mother’s Day) in my local events YAML.

  2. Calendar Entities: The integration automatically creates entities like calendar.holiday_events.

  3. Automation Trigger: When a calendar event starts, a Home Assistant automation triggers based on calendar.holiday_events turning on and reads the event summary title to switch my WLED light strips to matching custom presets automatically.

This integration replaced about 20+ unique date helpers, and equivalent automations. I now have one automation handling almost all my holiday lighting, and no helpers required since they’re all calendar events now.

I also use this to track all of the holidays I’m interested in. I have tried the holidays integration, but the lack of customizability frustrated me. This integration allows me to easily create custom holidays once and rest assured they’ll fall on the right days every year.
