Hello:
I’m going to use an old Dell Latitude 5420 for my HA. Rasberry is fantastic but Influxdb and Mosquitto toast it.
I’m going to use Hassio + Portainer. Influxdb and Mosquitto will be installed directly on disk, without a container, the old-fashioned way. The IOPS will be guaranteed ( SSD ).
My question to the forum is about experiences and tips to place the server in a domestic environment.
I’ve seen people remove the casing to improve ventilation and others put it in a ventilated rack.
What is your experience in installing hardware in a home environment?
in the other side, I’m looking for a WAF ( wife approval shield)… best inside an IKEA cupboard?
Put it as low down as possible in the coolest room in the house with plenty of ventilation.
I have the unenviable job of moving my server rack (and tons of network cabling) from high up in an upstairs walk in wardrobe to a cool downstairs room at some stage. Simply because of the summer heat and heat generated by the equipment.
At least it’s an excuse to upgrade to cat6 cabling at the same time I suppose.
I recall this is a laptop in dells lineup. Given that find a climate controlled low dust environment and tuck it away anywhere. It should be quiet, the lid can stay closed and as a bonus you have a battery backup built in.
I don’t see the need to rack it or create any special container. When I ran my setup on a laptop I just put it on a shelf in my desk.
