Device does not respond to request from HA - suspect the pipe is ....(half?!) broken

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can explain this slightly odd behaviour I’ve noticed with one of my ESP32 devices running ESPHome.

This device seems to half lose its connection with Home Assistant in that information pushed to it from Home Assistant doesn’t arrive, but information sent from the board to Home Assistant DOES arrive.

What on earth do I mean?

It has a button attached to it, in the “half asleep” state if I press the button, the button press is immediately and accurately recorded in Home Assistant.

But I tell Home Assistant to tell the ESPHome board to play a sound file, the sound file isn’t played.

However if I restart the board it begins to function normally again.

I suspect the connection is (half) lost when Home Assistant is restarted, but I’m not sure about this.

Previously when I’ve had this issue, when the device is totally offline, I can see the failed play in the logging on Home Assistant. However in this halfway house, where the device just does not respond, I see no such logging.

Any idea what’s going on?

thanks!!

Not without logs

hmm, might be tricky to provide them because as I said - when the device doesn’t respond, there isn’t a corresponding ‘fail’ logged on the HA side. I’ll have a think. I understand what you mean, though.

Was talking about the esphome log.
