The “Create backup before updating” checkbox is useful in the update card when updating an addon or HA Core itself, but it would be even more useful if it displayed an estimated backup size and/or the file tree of what will be backed up, so I can determine whether it’s worth making a backup or not.
For example, I might not want to make a backup of the ESPHome addon if it backs up all the ESPHome files, including the temporary intermediate files used for compilation, since those are quite large.
