DIY LUX Sensor

I just finished a quick LUX Sensor project that I thought I’d share. Inexpensive parts, easy assembly, no 3D printing, and it has been working well for me.

It is meant for monitoring outdoor LUX values while the unit itself remains indoors. It’s an ESPHome based project.

DIY LUX Sensor

What types of automations are you using this in? I have a couple off-the-shelf devices that have lux sensors built-in, but I’ve never really put them to any use.

I use mine to automate light levels in my house.

I have a low light sensor based on lux sensors inside and outside the house to control lights. Some will trigger on or off based on this. In other cases it will control whether a light is switched on (via a condition) when opening e.g. any of the garage doors.

Currently I am using the LUX Sensor to manage my home’s exterior lighting. Nothing complex, I just wanted my exterior lighting to be responsive to the light level outdoors (sunset, sunrise, storm clouds etc.)

Having a LUX Sensor that sits in a window sill looking outward solved the issues of making an outdoor LUX Sensor waterproof and getting power to it outdoors. So far it is working very well.

I choose the outside type.
