It’s not uncommon for us to get this much rain here on the east coast of Australia. My gauge tends to read a little bit lower than other gauges in the area too.
Just looking to get this built, where you solder the wires to the sensor, does it matter which way around the cables are soldered to the sensor?
No, it’s just a switch.
Just built one and used one of these door sensors off AliExpress. Its fits nicely in the case so no need to cut scape to route the cable

As the user @greencardigan is not posting the yaml, I would suggest putting your rain gauge configuration, the post of this user, inclusive images, in an AI tool of your choice. I bet you’ll come a long way getting the YAML!
After a dry period, a spider had once again sabotaged my rain gauge with it’s web! ![]()
Gave it a good clean and inspected the sensor, still on the original battery and no signs of any corrosion whatsoever!
Note! Not every door contact sensor works.
I tried the MOES one first, but it didn't work; the Aqara one does.
With the MOES door sensor, the switching pulse is too short when the rocker flips.
So it's not just me! I've built up several different collectors / buckets with no-name Zigbee sensors that have worked very well for many months, however the most recent one built last week has been frustratingly unreliable, missing many pulses.
I was blaming my Zigbee network / RF conditions as when I put the collector on the bench it worked fine for manual tipping. But it appears bucket tipping (with rainfall) is too fast as the unit itself doesn't flash for some tips. The cheap / smaller door sensors now seem to mainly use hall effect sensors instead of reed switches; I suspect they are set for a longer duration minimum pulse but can't see anything in the config data to confirm this.
I'm also finding rapid battery drain on some CR2032 powered units. The supplied battery lasted less than a week in two units I bought! This chart is with a replacement quality-brand battery, which won't last much longer...
My original no-name unit (2xAAA battteries, hall effect switch as sensor) has performed well for over a year with battery level still 100%. Like @parrel my main cause of outage is spider disruption.

The Chinese have swapped the item behind the AliExpress link for the Misol rain gauge with a super expensive rain gauge. Maybe exchange the link with a screenshot of the listing?
