Do I Really Need a Myenergi Eddi with Daikin Heat Pump?

Hi all,

I’m getting a Daikin heat pump with Madoka controller installed by Octopus Energy in December and I’m trying to figure out the best way to heat my hot water using excess solar and off-peak electricity.

I’ve had a quote of about £450 from Octopus to install a Myenergi Eddi for this, but I’m not sure if I really need to spend that cash.

I already use Home Assistant to automate my Zappi car charger, setting it to fast charge when the Octopus Agile tariff goes free or below a set threshold, and I’m pretty sure I can do the same for heating hot water with the Eddi. Also the advantage being that both used excess solar automatically.

But I also know there’s a Daikin/Madoka plugin for HASS, and I was thinking maybe I could just use this setup to manage heating my water without forking out for an Eddi.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done something similar or has any advice!

Heat Pump:
Daikin Atherma 3 Monobloc - 4kW/Special Coating (EDLA04EV/BLYGD)

Hot Water Cylinder:
Daikin Hot Water Cylinder -
250L (EKHWSU250D3V3)

Thanks!

Hey!

I just had a Daikin installed by Octopus and have had success controlling it using the integration GitHub - jwillemsen/daikin_onecta: Home Assistant Integration for devices supported by the Daikin Onecta App

Setup/connection was reasonably straighforward and if you’re already using HA to control Zappi, you could use a similar automation to get the heat pump to run during excess solar.

It seems there are limited entities you can change on the heat pump, they are mostly sensors. So far I’ve only changed the thermostat temperature, but can see the leaving water temperature is editable too. Unfortunately I can’t seem to control the hot water via HA. If you find a way, please let me know!

If you want to control the immersion heater automatically, you can get a relatively cheap smart switch fitted (I used this before the Octopus install with my old immersion heater https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BTCPBQ7N/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1). Fairly easy to configure with HA in the same way you have with Zappi.
