I would suggest you try killing the power or removing the battery from each of your device types.
Specifically to test:
If HA notices the device has gone offline.
How long it takes for HA to notice.
It’s all well and good creating automations that look for the unavailable status, but if that doesn’t happen in a time frame that meets your needs, it’s not going to help much…
But for IP based things, Uptime Kuma is great. Lots of customization, notification options, etc. I have mine monitor common AWS endpoints to identify when it’s just my whole internet being broken. Also, being able to match on a string (like something in a footer) so you can be confident the system is working and not just returning an error page is super helpful!
It would be really great if you would open up an issue and give me as much information as you can remember. What version, how long did it run, do you have any thought of what might have been the cause? Did you examine the HA logs for any errors or warnings? This would be the tell.
If there is a problem, or a conflict with another integration, I will only be able to find it if I am made aware of it, and even better if I have the data. Anyway, thanks for trying it out.
If anyone else here has a problem, please open an issue and report it.
To close the loop for anyone who finds this later: for things inside Home
Assistant there is plenty — Watchman, Spook (entity_fell_silent), Device
Sentinel, Device Pulse, Uptime Kuma, or a template sensor of your own. For
anything on the LAN that HA doesn’t know about — the guest’s phone, the
cloud-only plug — the answer is a scanner like NetAlertX, which runs as an
add-on and watches the whole interface. And as @boheme61 points out, a decent
router integration plus the DHCP Browser under Settings → System → Network
already gets you a long way.
@jamieFL — thank you for answering directly, and for pointing at a tool that
isn’t yours. That’s the most useful kind of answer. Good luck with the HACS
listing.
The honest conclusion for me is that this is a well-covered problem, and I’d
mostly have been rebuilding what already works. Better to learn that from
twenty of you in a week than from six months of evenings.
