Do you normally use the main stream or sub-stream for dashboards?

Just curious how everyone configures their cameras.

I'm currently using the main stream (1080p), but loading multiple cameras on a dashboard feels a bit slow.

Do most people switch to the sub-stream for live view and keep the main stream only for recording?

Interested to hear what works best.

It really depends on the hardware you are running on, both your HA server and your dashboard will need a reasonable spec to display multiple 1080p streams. If you are using an RPi or similar and an older tablet it really is going to struggle.

So use the substream, but even that may overload things.

multiple cams in substream and zoomed in in main stream... It makes imho no sense to use mainstreams in multiple view... or did you have a 4k Display and show 4x 1080P cams :wink: ?

That's a good point. My HA server is actually running on a fairly capable mini PC, but some of the dashboards are viewed on older tablets, so the client device could definitely be the bottleneck.

Have you noticed a big difference in responsiveness when switching everything to sub-stream? Also, how many cameras are you usually displaying on the same dashboard?

That makes sense. Most of the time the camera cards are relatively small anyway, so displaying the full 1080p stream probably doesn't add much value.

Do you manually switch to the main stream when you need to inspect something, or have you found a card or integration that can automatically use the main stream when opening a single camera?

I gave up trying to display cameras on my tablet dash boards, it just made everything slow and pointless. I have a seperate dashboard that has the cameras on it if I really do need to see them and just swap to it if needed.

To be fair I can just turn round from looking at my dashboard and see the view from cameras out of the window :slight_smile:

I have had nothing but problems on dashboards that have live camera views. Not worth the pain. I have plenty of other ways to signal I need to see a camera

So my choice is -none- camera stream...

Yep I just have voice alerts if a person comes onto my land when I am home or alerts to my phone when I am out, no need to see live view of my drive or garden on the dashboard. I have tried in the past to do this though, but would need to spend money on far better hardware, for no real gain.
