Duck DNS & Let's Encrypt doesn't work

I’m trying to make the DuckDNS add-on working.

Here is what I put in the config/configuration.yaml file :

http:
  ssl_certificate: /ssl/fullchain.pem
  ssl_key: /ssl/privkey.pem

Here is what I have in the DuckDNS configuration section :

In the menu Configuration > General, I filled the information in the external and internal URL sections :

URL externe : https://xxx.duckdns.org
URL interne : https://homeassistant.local

I also tried with the port 8123 in the URL.

The Log section of the DuckDNS add-on seems with no error.

When I reboot my RPi, I don’t manage to get the login page anymore. For it to be back, I have to remove the 3 lines added in the config/configuration.yaml file.

I also set up my router (static IP in DHCP section and internal / external port in the NAT/PAT section).

I don’t know what else to try…

1 - your internal url will not work with this setup, leave it blank or duplicate your external url in the internal box.

2 - make sure your port forwarding is from external 443 to internal 8123

3 - check your router for any configurations options regarding ‘loopback’ or ‘hairpin’, and ensure they are enabled if present. This is the facility that allows you to use an external url to ‘loopback’ into your home network to access the resource.

4 - reboot the rooter and the computer that homeassistant is on to be certain that the new configuration is is loaded

5 - Access homeassistant using your external url. If it fails, try disconnecting your phone from your WiFi to rule out loopback issues.

6 - if it is still failing, paste your logs.

The only difference i have to yours is i put the actual numbers in the URL interne : 192.168.1.xx:8123, you could give that a try.

1 - OK, I leave internal URL blank

2 - It was 8123 for both internal and external. Now it’s external 443 and internal 8123.

3 - Unfortunatly, I haven’t these options with my router

4 - Done

5 - Doesn’t work, I tried with and without 8123, with and without https, with external and internal URL

OK, there’s a problem with the certificates.

Can you check that they have been created and are definitely in /ssl/* (bearing in mind that you’re in a container so the paths will be relative to the container not your computer)

Edit, in fact if you scroll all the way to the top of your log file to the last restart time it may tell you what the error is with the certs, possibly.

Do I have to paste them back in the file ?

Yeah, you can only use ssl if you have those lines under your http: component.

Please ensure

http:
  ssl_certificate: /ssl/fullchain.pem
  ssl_key: /ssl/privkey.pem

Is in your configuration and restart homeassistant. Once restarted try to access the ui at

https://YOUR_DOMAIN.duckdns.org

(try from inside your network, and if that fails try from outside)

If it doesn’t work, paste the logs.

As I said in my first message, with these lines added in the config/configuration.yaml, I can’t access to the login page of HA anymore (with internal or external URL, https or http, 8123 or not).

First line of that log. There is an error with your ssl certificate

I can’t really help much more than that other than to say double and triple check all of your settings that generated that certificate

As I can’t access to the UI, I don’t know what else I could check.

Maybe the configuration of duckdns add-on itself ? But to do so, I don’t know what other choice I have than remove the lines in the config/configuration.yaml and make some more checks.

You should be able to access the UI using https://local_ip:8123
Your browser should show you a warning page.

Might be worth filling an issue in the github repo for the addon, as the log from the addon suggests that the certificate is fine, but the log from homeassistant suggests that it is not.

Off the top of my head this could mean

the addon isn’t checking the cert correctly and giving a false positive
it is creating the cert elsewhere and then ‘copying’ it to the location where homeassistant is looking for it and something is wrong with the mechanism
the cert file generated is being made with incorrect permissions and homeassistant cannot read it

… But it could be something completely different, or some combination of the above.

Did you get any luck with this? I think I have a similar problem and not sure how to fix it.
If it helps, when I try to access XXXX.duckdns.org it throws ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
